Winslow Grosvenor Fox, M.D. took his last breath on Saturday, March 18, 2017.  He practiced family medicine in Ann Arbor for 34 years and served on the staff at St Joseph Mercy Hospital.  Many will remember his kind smile, tender demeanor, and eagerness to share the promises of his heavenly father.

Winslow was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the 3rd of 4 children born to Howard Stowell Fox and Dorothy Prentice Fox.  Inspired by Albert Schweitzer’s reverence for life and desire to alleviate suffering, he studied medicine at the University of Chicago (M.D. 1948). While singing in the choir he met his future bride, Elizabeth Ferwerda.  The two were drawn together by their desire to do missionary work.  Married in 1945, they went to Puerto Rico where Winslow served as a doctor in Humacao.  Their time as medical missionaries ended abruptly when the Army summoned him to serve as a physician for a Puerto Rican regiment in the Korean Conflict. Winslow quickly moved his wife and 2 daughters to be near his brother in Ann Arbor.  On his return, Winslow and Elizabeth raised their family, often filling their home with music and people from other countries.  They were very active in both the First United Methodist Church and The Word of God Community.  Later they attended St. Luke Lutheran Church and the University Lutheran Chapel (ULC).

In 2002, Winslow and Elizabeth moved to the Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC), a decision they never regretted.  In 2011, Winslow’s beloved bride joined the Heavenly Choir.  Winslow continued to attend church every Sunday thanks to faithful friends from ULC.

Winslow was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings and is survived by his 4 loving daughters: Laurie Fox, Carolyn (Dave) Inglis, Patsy (John) Bruenger and Marcia Fox; 7 grandchildren: Damien (Lesli Bjork) and Andrew (Caroline Fogarty) Rozendal, Emilyn and Dan (Sage Curtis) Inglis, Peter Bruenger, Beth (Dave) McKenzie, Amy McClung; and 4¾ great grandchildren, as well as many who were considered part of the family.

A celebration of life will be held at St Luke Lutheran Church, Ann Arbor on Saturday, March 25th, 11:00 am with time for visitation with the family at 10:00 am.  There was also a time of remembrance at Chelsea Retirement Community on Thursday, March 23.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Winslow’s memory are requested for Bethania Kids, PO Box 2140, Winchester, VA 22604-1340 or University Lutheran Chapel, 1511 Washtenaw Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48104 or United Methodist Retirement Communities, 805 W. Middle St, Chelsea, MI 48118.  Also consider sharing a flower, a joke or a word of encouragement with a neighbor or someone who could use a bright spot in their day.
