of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Pontiac, Sturgis, Ann Arbor, Cassopolis, Chelsea, and Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, for 20 years before returning to Chelsea, age 90, passed away Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at Towsley Village. He was born October 27, 1934, in Sylvan Lake, Michigan, the son of George Raymond Bittle and Barbara Burr Miller.

First and foremost, Jack was a devoted husband, the best father, and an outstanding role model. He was just a good, good man who brought great joy to many. Jack took administration courses from both the University of Michigan and Western Michigan. He had a Bachelor’s Degree in Instrumental Music and a Master’s Degree in the Humanities, both from U of M. While at U of M, he played in the marching band and symphony band. Jack began teaching as Band Director in 1956, in Cassopolis, Michigan, and was there two years. In 1958, he became Band Director at Sturgis High School and taught for 13 years. For the following 11 ½ years, Jack was the High School Principal at Sturgis. Jack was active in the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals and became President in 1976. In January of 1981, Jack became the Executive Director for the MASSP and remained there until June of 1996, when he retired to Fairfield Glade, Tennessee. Of all the things Jack did in his career, being a band director was the most important because of all the students he could reach and teach.

Jack was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chelsea and Fairfield Glade, TN. He was active in the church choir as singer and director. He directed the Cumberland County Community Chorus from January of 1997 to spring of 2003. Jack conducted church choirs for over 25 years and started several community choirs. He ended his time by conducting the Cumberland County Community Band in 2008. During retirement, he found he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and wood carving, and made many carvings over the years.

Jack married Glenna Jean Webster on August 23, 1953, in Orchard Lake, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughters, Robin (Andy) Schuler of Sturgis, Susan (Ben) Myers of Pinckney, Lori (Pat) Minnick of Chelsea; sister, Janiene Elwood of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee, and Margie (Ken) James of Leesburg, Virginia; brother, Richard Bittle of Portage; 8 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, August 13, 2025, 2:00 p.m. at Chelsea First United Methodist Church, with a dessert reception to follow. The family received friends before the service from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. A private burial will be held at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery in Troy, Michigan. To honor Jack’s love of music and his ties to the Sturgis community, donations may be made in his name to the Sturgis Area Community Foundation, 214 W. Chicago Rd., Sturgis, MI 49091, so that his legacy of supporting Sturgis band students can continue. Arrangements were entrusted to Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

Mr. Brittle was my band director from the 7th - 12th grade in Sturgis. He was the most influential teacher in all my high school and college years. It’s had to describe someone like him - kind, firm, leader, mentor, etc. The word SPECIAL - comes to mind. I know he left so many legacies, with so many people. God certainly gave me a blessing having him in my growing up years. My sincere condolences to all his family.

Of course, I remember him as my high school, principal. As a principal, he was caring, fair, and an excellent role model, not only to his students, but to adults as well. However, I remember him mostly as my good friends, father. I look back fondly at the many sleepovers and playing in the backyard. Such a good man that I’m certain will be missed for many generations to come. My deepest condolences to the family. May the closeness that you have with each other give you strength during this difficult time. As you share memories, I hope a smile comes across your face.

I had the very good fortune of working closely with Jack for 10 years while he was the Executive Director of the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP) and I was the Michigan Director of the North Central Association (NCA). Jack's office at the University of Michigan's School of Education was just down the steps from me and we visited often. I regularly sought his advice and counsel as we both oversaw organizations that supported students, parents, teachers, and in particular, secondary school principals. Jack was kind, thoughtful and dedicated. His first priority was to support the members of MASSP, but closely behind that, Jack recognized that his organization needed to support students, parents and teachers, and he did that with enthusiasm. I cherish the time that we spent together, a time that he mentored and supported me—and as Michigan alums, reflect on our time as students in Ann Arbor. GO BLUE!

Mr. Bittle was my Band Director and percussion instructor in my Freshman and Sophomore years at SHS before he bacame Principal. He worked with me and encouraged me to take both a drum and a marimba solo, to both District and State contests both years. He always seemed "just a little bit larger than life" as he taught us that hard work is fun and the joy of taking pride in working to be the best we can is something precious we carry with us through our life.

Jack Bittle was a remarkable man, Band Director, Musician, member of Bob Gray’s Band Top Brass, and , Church Choir Director. Jack’s Birthday, October 27th, was my Birthdate also (4 years )before me. I will always remember my Trip with Robin to see her parents in Tennessee, at their retirement home in earlier years. He was so proud of his three beautiful daughters, who made music shine in Sturgis Musicals. I was so happy to come to know Jack and his beautiful wife Glenna. I will be thinking of Jack at his Funeral Service. I pray for your whole family, for God’s peace and love to surround you Wednesday!!!

I was Center VII Chair when Jack retired as Director of MASSP. He was a great leader and definitely a role model for all Principals. I surprised Jack in his garage on a visit to Fairfield Glade. I will always remember his kindness and genuine care for education. God speed to Jack and his family.

Robin, Lori, and Susan… I’m. So sorry for your loss. Throughout my years of HS, I passed your dad many times, in the band room, as a principal, and I always wanted to know him better. He gave off a warmth and kindness I didn’t expect from a man of authority. It wasn’t until years later when I had the blessing to get to really know Robin. That same warmth and kindness is a gift that carries on. God bless you all with seeet memories of life together.
