Obituaries

of Chelsea, MI, age 87, passed away peacefully on, Friday, December 18, 2015 in Chelsea, Michigan, and is now with his Lord. He was born September 11, 1928 in Romeo, Michigan, the son of Arthur & Merle (Kimball) Schoenberg. Don graduated from Imlay City High School in 1946. Don worked at many places over the years including; Chelsea Hardware in charge of small engine repair from 1957-1962, he owned and operated a Sinclair Gas Station in Chelsea from 1962-1966, a journeyman carpenter in the Detroit area from 1968-1976,and retired from the University of Michigan Hospital in 1987. After retirement he was “Mr. Handyman” around town, and was know as a master woodworker.

He was Sylvan Township Supervisor and Assessor for many years.  Don was a longtime faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he was the President of Church Council, Superintendent of Sunday School and also did a lot of the maintenance and repair work for the church. He volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for many years and was a House Leader for several of them.  Don also volunteered many hours at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was a former member of Kiwanis Club. Don’s greatest joy was spending time with his family.

On April 19, 1947, he married Cheryl Sohn in Imlay City, and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Doug (Beckie) of Chelsea, Dale (Cindy) of Stockbridge; a brother, Richard Schoenberg of Shelby Township; five grandchildren, Rachel (Joseph) Ivanowski, Corrie (Matthew Arnn) Schoenberg, Christopher (Jessica) Schoenberg, Sunni Schoenberg, Kaci Schoenberg; five great-grandchildren, Colin, Wyatt, Rhett, Dash, Anwen; and many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by a son, Dean Schoenberg, a sister, Margaret Koch and two brothers, Carl Schoenberg and Howard Schoenberg.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 28, 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kathy Tulman officiating.  Burial will be at Vermont Cemetery, Chelsea, Michigan. The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel on Sunday, Dec 27 from 1-6 pm and Monday at the church from 10- 11 am.
