Obituaries

of Chelsea, Michigan, age 85, died Thursday, June 25, 2015 at his home with his family at his side. He was born January 30, 1930 in Grass Lake, Michigan, the son of Walter J. & Norma Mary (Sluyter) Schittenhelm.
  John was a heavy equipment operator at Chrysler Proving Grounds, and was a member of UAW Local 1284.  He served in the US Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany.   John loved to hunt and fish, and he especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren.

 

   On June 11, 1952, he married Ramona Cole in Toledo, OH, and she survives. Other survivors include 3 children, Thomas (Ronda) Skittenhelm of Gregory, Julie Day of Chelsea, Susan (William) Callaway of Manchester; 6 grandchildren, Kelsey & Kendra Skittenhelm, Amy (Scott) Yaede, Cara (Brian) Callaway-Lucier, Matthew Callaway, Ian (Katie) Callaway; 1 sister, Mary (Robert) Bauer; and several nieces & nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Ruth (Leroy) Bristle.


   The family received friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Wednesday, July 1, from 2-4 & 6-9 pm. A private memorial service will be held.  Burial will be at Oak Grove East Cemetery, Chelsea. Memorial contributions may be made to U of M Melanoma Research or Arbor Hospice.
