Phyllis Howell, a remarkable and beloved wife and mother, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the University of Michigan Hospital. She had suffered a heart attack in her home ten days prior.  Phyllis, born on February 21, 1955, in Jamestown, NY, was the daughter of William Chapin Keyes and Pauline Phyllis (Sparling) Keyes.

Phyllis graduated from Greece Arcadia High School in 1973. Her talent and dedication were recognized early on when she won a piano competition in High School, allowing her to perform with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. She then pursued higher studies at SUNY-Fredonia in New York, and obtained her Master of Music in Piano Performance from the University of Michigan. Throughout her musical journey, Phyllis had the privilege of studying under esteemed teachers, including her own mother (Pauline Keyes), Claudette Sorel, and Theodore Lettvin. Additionally, she spent a year at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London.

Enthusiastic in sharing her love of music, she went on to immerse herself in the vibrant musical community of Ann Arbor. As a passionate teacher, she immediately grew a studio of 40 students after her graduation. Phyllis offered piano lessons in her home and was especially talented at accompanying and sight-reading, accompanying numerous students at local schools as well as accompanying and even once directing the Michigan Women’s Glee Club.

She left a lasting impact on her students and those who had the privilege of hearing her play at weddings, birthdays, churches, nursing homes, and hospitals. Phyllis' vivacious spirit was infectious; her quick wit, vibrant laugh, and love for singing and dancing illuminated every room she entered. She frequently engaged in square dancing and clogging, further enriching her life and the lives of those around her.

As a woman of deep faith and a devoted prayer warrior, she attended several churches throughout her life, including Lakeside, Northside, Cornerstone, Knox, Northridge, and 2|42. In addition to her role as a mother and homemaker, Phyllis undertook the task of educating all five of her children in various subjects, starting from kindergarten and continuing well into their high school studies. Her dedication and love for her family were boundless, and the walls of her home reverberated with beautiful piano notes every evening as her children listened and dozed in their beds. Phyllis was an avid animal lover, caring for multiple dogs, cats, chickens, and goats throughout her life, even nursing the runts of litters when rejected by their mothers.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, James Howell; and her children, Jesse Howell (m. Debbie) of Ann Arbor, Genevieve Howell of Grand Rapids, Austin Howell of Seattle, WA, Christina Howell of Asheville, NC, and Barak Howell of Dexter, MI. She also leaves behind her siblings, Cheryl Brinkman, Clifford "Kip" Keyes, and Greg Keyes (m. Kathy); her uncle Wayne Sparling (m. Cora); and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind two adored grandchildren, Benjamin and Victoria Howell. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Pauline and William Keyes, as well as her brother-in-law Kevin Brinkman.

Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea on Saturday, June 24th, from 2-5 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life at Misty Farm, beginning with socialization/games at 5 p.m. and the service at 6 p.m. All are welcome and we look forward to celebrating as Phyllis loved best: with friendship, music, games, and food.

My deepest sympathy to your family. Phylis was a very special lady and it was a privilege to know her. She had an infectious laugh. She was also very sweet and was always willing to help whenever you needed something..
May God shower you with his peace during this time. A peace that passes all understanding

To the Howell family:
My husband and I wish to send our deepest, condolences to the family. Phyllis was a remarkable woman that I enjoyed getting to know her for the short period of time the Lord blessed us with. I am so grateful for the time and friendship we had. I am most grateful that our separation is temporary, as I believe her faith in Christ for eternal salvation has made her departure bittersweet, and that one day we will all be reunited. So we werp not as others, but stand fast in that "blessed hope" Christ provided by his death and resurrection.
Love in Christ,
Pam and Chuck Haskell

Phyllis taught piano to both my children, late 90’s and onward. She was a special person to all of us - so full of light and generosity - and patience - all those recitals! Phyllis and my family walked many different paths, that never got in the way of our enjoyment and delight in each other over the years. What a huge loss. Love to her family.

We shared many good times and a few hard times at Cornerstone together with Phyllis and Jim. Figuring out what it meant to serve the Lord, and to homeschool in a way that pleased Him. It was also a treat to play on the worship team with Phyllis and other talented godly musicians, many good memories there as well. I plan to be there on Saturday evening (unfortunately, Kathleen can't make it) to tell the Howells how incredibly sorry we are at her passing but to share in the legacy she left and the fellowship of old friends.

I remember Phyllis saying in Bible study that “we really have no idea what’s happening in the heavenly. And it should give us pause and makes me feel humble” and she certainly was right and made us all pause at the profound simplicity of her comments. Prayers for all her family and loved ones. I’m so sorry for this profound untimely loss.

Jim and Family,
Our prayers are with you during this time of grief and loss. We are in shock after seeing you at the graduation party a couple of weeks ago. Nothing seemed wrong or out of the ordinary. Yet, here we are days later grappling with this tremendous loss. Our hearts are broken.

Jim, you and Phyllis nurtured us during our early walk with Christ. We will never forget the love and support you showed us during the wonderful days of the Howell Home Group. We treasure you both, and the memories we have will live in our hearts forever.

Unfortunately, we are out of town right now and will not be back in time for the memorial for Phyllis. Please accept our long distance love and condolences. We are making a donation in Phyllis’ name to Samaritan’s Purse. May the Lord bring you His joy and His peace even in the midst of this great loss. We love you all.

Remembering a graduation party at your home! My son decided to team up with Jim and Phyllis and I teamed up for the ping pong tournament. At the end of the play it was Phyllis and I against Jim and Josh. Well Phyllis and I won which was really fun for both of us! Phyllis had a delightful zest for life! It has been a joy to know her all these years! She will be missed greatly! Praying for the family.
