She was born on November 11, 1918 (Armistice Day) in Detroit, MI to Michael and Anna (Najalowach) Holowach. They were Ukrainian immigrants (1913) who owned and operated a neighborhood grocery store. When she was a young child her family purchased a farm in Clinton, MI (1927). She graduated in 1937 from Clinton High School.
