Joan N. Maier

Of Chelsea, Michigan. age 90, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2022 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born February 19, 1932 in Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, the daughter of Rexford H. and Irma (Wells) Fluno.

Joan graduated from Lincoln High School in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, and moved to Ann Arbor before marrying Red, then to Chelsea in 1972. Joan worked in accounting for the University of Michigan. She was a volunteer at Chelsea Community Hospital. Joan enjoyed playing cards, quilting and knitting; and loved to travel with family.

Elaine Marie Knickerbocker

Age 97, died Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born July 2, 1925 in Norway, MI, the daughter of Vines & Jennie (Burm) Bernard.

Elaine graduated from Norway High School in 1942, and attended Cleary College in 1943. In 1959 she moved to Chelsea. Elaine was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She retired from Springer Insurance at the age of 65. Elaine enjoyed her family, friends, reading, and gardening. She also enjoyed playing cards with several different groups and loved to travel. She was a member of the Chelsea Woman’s Club and the Altar Society.

Robert John Sherwin

Age 65, died Tuesday, July 26, 2022 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was born January 5, 1957 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of Robert K. and Violet (Broder) Sherwin. He married Kathy (Hilton) Sherwin, who preceded him in death on July 13, 2019.  Survivors include his son, Ryan Jacob Sherwin of Perrysburg, OH; grandchildren, Evelyn Mae Sherwin & Vivienne Marie Sherwin; step-daughter, Amy Hilton; step-grandchildren, Sydney Hilton and Alicia Hilton; siblings, Mary (Sherwin) Bartlett of North Port, FL; Shelly (Sherwin) Davis of Saline, MI; and nieces Nicole Sweeny, Ashley Vermeylen, Morgan Compton, and Lauren Gawura.  

Barbara Clark

Age 75, of Jonesville, VA and formerly of Chelsea, MI, passed away in her home on Monday August 8, 2022, after a short illness. She was born on October 11th, 1946, the daughter of Russell and Kathleen Bernath, who both preceded her death.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Clark; a son, Gregory (Christina) Clark of Defiance, OH, daughter, Kristen (Donald) Rogers of Jonesville, VA; four grandchildren, Blake (Paige) Clark of Defiance, OH, Zackary Clark of Bradenton, FL, and Colten and Cayden Rogers of Jonesville, VA; and one great-grandchild, Oakley Clark of Defiance, OH. Barbara was a member of Cedar Hill Christian Church. She enjoyed sewing quilting and gardening.

Coyne Holiday

Age 93, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022. He was born March 20, 1929 in Magoffin County, Kentucky, the son of Clay & Lena Holiday.

Coyne moved to Chelsea, MI in 1941 where he graduated from the Chelsea School District. After graduating, he met the love of his life, Betty Tanner, and was married on March 6, 1951. Immediately after he was married, he served two years in the Army in combat in the Korean War. Coyne worked for Chrysler for a total of 32 years; during which he took a brief time off to study Christian ministry with aid from the G.I. Bill. He then resumed work for Chrysler while founding and ministering his own church, Deerfield Union Church in Deerfield Center of Northern Livingston County for 9 years. After this, Coyne became assistant pastor to the Dexter Gospel Church in Dexter, MI for several years. Coyne aided in the building of the new church located on Baker Road in Dexter, performed many weddings and funeral services, and continued to find great enjoyment and fulfillment in his involvement with Dexter Gospel for the past 70 years. Coyne's favorite bible verse was John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
