Obituaries

of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Shiawassee, age 96, died Friday, April 15, 2016 at Chelsea Retirement Community (TV). She was born February 22, 1920 in Potter, Nebraska, the daughter of Clare & Daisy Dykeman. Wynona was a first grade teacher for 10 years, then attended Taylor University where she met Homer. She earned her Master's degree and was a social worker for Shiawassee Schools for 23 years.  She also served as a minister's wife in  several United Methodist churches. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Outdoor Association in Bancraft & Byron, Michigan. Wynona was very artistic and enjoyed painting and crafts like sewing and ceramics.  She was a great speaker and enjoyed leading programs.

   On August 8, 1942, she married Rev. Homer D. VanBuren in Jonesburo, IN, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 1, 2011. Survivors include one son, Thomas (Coral) VanBuren of Edwardsburg, MI; one daughter, Judy (Lloyd) Whitehead of Ann Arbor; five grandchildren, Shantelle of Chicago, Gordan, Ryan, April, and Tyler; one brother, Paul (June) Dykeman of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne as well as an infant brother.

   A graveside service will be held Sunday, October 23, 1 pm, at Union Plains Cemetery in Byron, Michigan. Memorial contributions may be made to Byron United Methodist Church, 101 S Ann St., P.O. Box 127, Byron, MI 48418. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.
