Obituaries

of Chelsea, age 86, died Monday, April 25, 2016 at Silver Maples of Chelsea. He was born December 23, 1929 in Ann Arbor, the son of Paul G., Sr. & Martha (Groggel) Schaible. Paul graduated from Chelsea High School in 1947.  He went on to graduate from the University of Michigan Business School with a BBA in 1951, and from Northwestern University with a MBA in 1952. Paul taught at the Finance School at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis from 1952-54. In 1956, he and his wife, Shirley, moved back to Chelsea, where Paul went to work at Chelsea State Bank. Paul served on the bank board for many years, and served as Bank President from 1985-93.  He retired in 1994, but continued as Chairman of the Board until 2005.


    Paul was very active in the Chelsea community, serving on the Village Council in the 1960's, President of the Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Recreation Council, long-time member of Kiwanis, United Way member, and the Chelsea Community Foundation Board from 1995-2010.  He was an active member of St. Paul United Church of Christ his entire life. He  was involved in building the church on Old US 12, and served as president of the church council.  Paul enjoyed playing bridge, and was a member of various bridge clubs over the years. Paul was an avid University of Michigan fan.  He also enjoyed golfing, traveling, and spending summers at Cavanaugh Lake.
   On June 20,1954, he married Shirley Anne Ehlers in Indianapolis, Indiana,  and she preceded him in death on February 17, 2006. Survivors include a son, David M. (Deborah) Schaible of Chelsea; a daughter, Anne M. (Timothy) Tatum of Coppell, Texas. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Emily Schaible, and Mark and Neal Tatum; a sister, Peg  Sutton; several nieces and nephews, and special friend and companion, Helen Lancaster. He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Paul in 1965.
   A funeral service was held Saturday, April 30, 11:00 am at St. Paul United Church Of Christ, Chelsea, with Pastor Jim Coyl officiating.  Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. The family received friends Friday from 2-4 pm and 6-9 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.
