Obituaries

formerly of Iowa City, IA, and Dexter, MI, age 92, died Thursday, March 5, 2015, at New Aldaya Lifescapes in Cedar Falls, Iowa.Harold William Koch was born May 19, 1922, in Lima Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan, the son of Albert and Mabel (Coe) Koch. 

He graduated from Dexter, Michigan high school in 1939, and attended Michigan Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) for 3 years before being called to active service in the United States Army during WWII.  He served his country for nearly two years in Europe and in the Battle of the Bulge. Returning to Michigan, he married Margaret Schoenberg on June 24, 1943 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Capac, Michigan.  The couple raised their family in Dexter, MI where Hal worked in the Lyndon Color Labs as a photographer and supervisor of the color printing department for over 39 years before his retirement.  Hal and Margaret moved to Iowa in 1986 to be nearer to family, to California in 1999, and back to Iowa in 2001, residing in Iowa City.  Hal enjoyed photography, building miniature furniture and model cars.

His family includes his daughter and her husband, Kathy Mundt and Jerry of Cedar Falls, IA; son and his wife, Keith Koch and Sue of Oxnard, CA; daughter-in-law, Cathy Divine-Koch of Iowa City;  six grandchildren, Ben Koch and his wife, Paula of The Colony, TX, Jeff Koch of Portland, OR, Cory Mundt of Austin, TX, Anthony Casello-Koch of Atascadero, CA, Sharon Hembree of Ventura, CA, and Anna Ellenberger of Ames, IA; great-grandchildren, Vincent Koch, Morena Koch, and Maya Koch; Hal was preceded in death by his wife of over 62 years, Margaret; son, Karl Divine-Koch; sister, Dorothea, and brother, Walter.

Graveside services were held Saturday, March 14, 10:30 a.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Chelsea, Michigan.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Cedar Valley Hospice or New Aldaya Lifescapes.  Local arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.
