Obituaries

of Ann Arbor, Michigan, age 96, died Saturday, February 7, 2015 at  his home. He was born March 7, 1918 in Menominee, Michigan, the son of Frank & Edna (McDonald) Smith.

George resided in Ann Arbor (Scio Township).  He was a home building contractor, a self-employed accountant, and owned Smith Village Insurance in Dexter before retiring.  He was a member of  St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea, and a former Scio Township Clerk.   George was a life time member and active supporter of the Dexter Knights of Columbus, and managed and assisted in building the K of C Hall on Dexter-Chelsea Road.

On June 19, 1943, he married Ella May Alber in Saline, Michigan, and she preceded him in death on June 13, 2009. Survivors include 7 sons, Joseph (Margaret) Smith of Chelsea, H.Vernon (Lynn) Smith of Saline, Alfred (Mary Lee) Smith of Ann Arbor, Daniel Smith of Ann Arbor, Patrick (Deneen) Smith of Ann Arbor, Russell (Mary Ann) Smith of Pinckney, James (Mona) Smith of Beaux Bridge, Louisiana; 3 daughters, Ella May Ann (William) Tarrier of Ann Arbor, Joanne (William Hill) Rogucki, of Green Valley, AZ, and Betty (Chuck) Raab of Ann Arbor; 18 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. George was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeff Smith.

   A Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, Feb. 14, 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiating.  Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Chelsea, Michigan.  The family received friends Friday 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, with a vigil service at 7:30 pm.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church, 14200 E. Old US 12, Chelsea, MI 48118.
