bulletCatherine Susan Varner

Age 55, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2010, due to lymphoma. Catherine will be remembered by her family and friends as a fiercely devoted mother, spouse, daughter, and sibling, while also being an exceptional attorney, teacher, writer, poet and playwright. Catherine will also be remembered as warm, highly optimistic person, who brought light to all whom she knew. Catherine was born July 1, 1954, in Midland, MI, to Harold and Ruth (Keck) Croisant. After graduating from Midland High School, Catherine attended the University of Michigan, where she received bachelors and masters degrees, her undergraduate degree with honors and Phi Beta Kappa recognition. After law school at Northeastern University, Catherine practiced litigation law in Boston, first at Goodwin, Proctor & Hoar and later with McCabe Gordon; for the next 10 years, she was an enforcement attorney for the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission in its Boston Office, ultimately serving as a Branch Chief. In 1991, as a single parent, she adopted two children from an orphanage in Romania, Marius and Elena "Flo". In 1993, Catherine married Christopher Varner, and in 1995 they had a son, Michael Varner. In 1996, Catherine left the practice of law to devote herself to her children. As a mother, Catherine believed in Jackie Kennedy’s observation that "if you bungle raising your children, I don’t think whatever else you do matters very much." For 12 years, Catherine lived in Scituate, MA, worshiping at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, while serving on its vestry and singing in the choir. After moving back to Michigan in 2001, Catherine dedicated time to teaching creative writing in the local schools, and to writing poetry, a memoir about her cancer treatments, and a play. She also participated in writing workshops, including those sponsored by The Purple Rose Theater. In Chelsea, Catherine worshiped at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and at the First Congregational Church. Among her many pursuits, Catherine enjoyed gardening, walking, bird watching, cooking for her family and friends, the theater, music, and the fellowship of her close friends, both those of long-standing and newer ones. Since 2006, during her treatment for cancer through the University of Michigan Health System, she was supported by Drs. Mark Kaminski, John Levine, Tara Master-Hunter, and Samuel Romano, as well as by Judy Estes and many others, who with kindness and cheer, provided her with aid and help. Although Catherine did not enjoy the brutality of the disease she had (lymphoma) or its treatments, the disease allowed her to deepen her Christian faith. Catherine is survived by her parents of Midland; her husband; three children, Marius (Malissa) of Saline, Eleana "Flo", and Michael, both at home; two grandchildren, Calihan & Rianne Varner; her siblings, Peter (Diane) Croisant of Beaver Falls, PA, Mary (Hank) Woods of Ypsilanti, and Robert (Donna) Croisant of Merriman, KS; and 10 nieces and nephews. In 1932 she graduated from the University of Illinois in Champagne-Urbana with a double major in chemistry and mathematics. The next year she began her career as a teacher in the high school of O’Fallon, IL, where she met the love of her life, Edwin C. Schilling, who worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. They married on Sept. 19, 1936 and moved to Hannibal, MO, where their only child, Sarah, was born. As a manager with Southwestern Bell, Ed was needed "at home" during the Second World War and the company moved them first to Little Rock, Arkansas, and then to St. Louis, MO, where Marian returned to teaching. Over the next twelve years she taught elementary school and later, mathematics courses at Webster Groves High School and Webster College. In 1960, Marian and Ed moved to Plainfield, NJ, where Ed worked for AT&T in New York City and Marian finished her career teaching science and mathematics in junior high school. When Ed retired in 1970, they built their dream home in Andover, VT. There they relished the beauty of the mountains and made new, long-lasting friendships, as they had done in each place they lived. In 1985 their final move together brought them to Dexter, Michigan, where Ed died on July 6, 1989. In September 1991, Marian moved into the new Dancey House at the Chelsea Retirement Community. bulletNancy Merkel

of Chelsea, Michigan, age 77, died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at her home.  Born to Leon & Clarice (Wright) Clark on July 25, 1932, Nancy was raised on the Clark family farm in Lyndon Township. On August 18, 1948 she married the love of her life, George Merkel, who has two pictures in his mind-the day that he waited at the top of the stairway to get a closer look at the most beautiful girl to ever attend Chelsea High School, and the day he stood at the altar as she approached for their marriage, which was to last almost 62 years. Nancy battled Parkinson’s Disease valiantly for more than a quarter of a century, yet though her body gave out, her spirit never gave up her zest for life, friends, family, flowers and crafting. When most would have taken to bed and given up, Nancy continued to get dressed and keep going-always looking forward to the next chance to visit with friends, attend a party or shop. Many will remember her as the flower lady-selling her bedding plants and beautiful arrangements at Farmers’ Market in Ann Arbor, or from her backyard greenhouse in Chelsea. She was a member of the St. Mary Altar Society, the GBU and German Park. Her passing leaves a great void in the lives of her husband, George, son, Michael Merkel and five surviving daughters: Linda (Walt) Hahn, Ann (Rod) Salyer, Beth (Craig) Corwin, Theresa (Jim) Tietjen, Margaret (Bill) Stech. She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 1 great- granddaughter and two brothers, James and Robert Keezer.
