bulletKatherine L. Stimac

of Chelsea, MI, formerly of Eastpointe, MI, Age 97, died Sunday, December 28, 2008, at Chelsea Retirement Community, of natural causes. She was born November 5, 1911, in  South Range, Michigan, the daughter of Phillip J. & Pauline (Jacovac) Stimac. After World War II, Katherine taught English to the children of U.S. military personnel in Germany; later, she taught Social Studies at Burbank Middle School in the Detroit Public School System from which she retired. She moved to Chelsea Retirement Community in 2001, where she had many dear friends. Survivors include her many nieces and nephews in Michigan and California, including Jean (Christopher) Hensick of Brighton, Charles (Flora) Cavedoni of Hawaii, Christine Cavedoni of South Carolina; and great nieces Laura Jean Housley, Olina Cavedoni, and Melia Cavedoni . She was preceded in death by five sisters, Eva Stimac, Mary Houser, Pauline Cox, Barbara Jean Cavedoni, Alberta Gaspard; and three brothers, John, Alex and Leonard Stimac. A memorial service was held Tuesday, January 6, 10:00am, at Chelsea Retirement Community’s Main Chapel. Burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Paw Paw, Michigan. Memorial contributions in Katherine’s honor to Chelsea Retirement Community Foundation, 805 W. Middle Street, Chelsea, MI 48118. Arrangements were handled by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. 

 

bulletOscar C. "Gus" Hansen

of Grass Lake, MI, age 79, died Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at his home. He was born December 16, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Carl and Agnette (Nelsen) Hansen. Gus graduated from Chelsea High School in 1948. He was a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors for 41 years, and served the State of Michigan on the State Elevator Board, the Lifting and Drilling Board, and the State Board of Michigan Building Trades. In 1968, Gus started Hansen Sports Center. He served in the Navy during the Korean War, and was the Commander of the Chelsea American Legion Post #31. He was a member of the VFW, and the Olive Lodge #156 of the Free and Accepted Masons in Chelsea. Gus was recently elected as a Trustee of Waterloo Township. On January 8, 1955, he married Cecelia M. Ledwidge in Chelsea, and she survives. Other survivors include a son, Steve (Sue) Hansen of Grass Lake; 4 grandchildren, Michael, Erin, Kim, and Joey; one great-grandchild, Jakob. He was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Oscar Hansen in 1998. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 27, 11:00 am at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Dale Grimm officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Waterloo. The family received friends Friday 1-4pm and 6-9 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. bulletCarolyn W. Vogel

of Chelsea, Michigan, age 78, died Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital. She was born June 23, 1930 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the daughter of Ernest & Lena ( Sorg ) Wilke. Carolyn was a member of Faith Lutheran Church. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Carolyn also enjoyed bowling and knitting. On May 14, 1949, she married Donald E. Vogel in Ann Arbor, and he survives. Other survivors include two sons, Tommy Vogel of Chelsea, Jeffery (Sherrie) Vogel of Katy, TX; one daughter, Marcia (Edward) Rautenkranz of Lebanon, MO; two sisters Charlotte Sell of McBain, and Karen (Gerald) Peters of Texas; seven grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 20 , 11:30 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Mark Porinsky officiating. Burial followed at Washtenong Memorial Park in Ann Arbor. bulletCarol J. Balliet

of Crystal Lake, IL, formerly of Chelsea, age 77, died suddenly Saturday, December 6, 2008 at her home. She was born September 5, 1931 in Gideon, Missouri, the daughter of  Cecil & Ethel T. (Sutton) Doty.  Carol moved from the Chelsea area of 20 years, to Elgin to live with her son in 2002. Carol was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ. She retired from the University of Michigan Department of Housing in 1990.  On September 8, 1951, she married William Irvin Balliet, and he preceded her in death on November 29, 1993. Survivors include one son, William Nathan of Crystal Lake, IL; three daughters, Cindy Balliet of Munith, Colleen Balliet of Munith, and Kim (Clinton) Gipson of Grass Lake; 1 brother, Douglas (Barbara) Doty of Belleville; 3 sisters, Mildred Mills of Saline, Dorothy (H. Russell) Bracken of Brighton and Judy (Dave) Buszka of Brooklyn; two grandchildren, Ethan & Travis; and several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held Thursday, Dec. 11, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea, with Pastor Dave Cornwell officiating.  Burial  followed at Salem Grove Cemetery. The family received friends Tuesday 5-7 pm and Wednesday 1-3 & 5-7 pm.  Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

 

bulletPaul F. Seitz

of Dexter, age 99, died Wednesday, December 3, 2008 at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born March 13, 1909, in Chelsea, the son of Fred J. & Emma (Visel) Seitz. Paul was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ where, he was confirmed. Paul was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He worked as a meat cutter, later becoming a master carpenter and a life member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. Paul worked his farm for many years. He took up maple syruping at the age of 90. His wine was well known in the community. He shared his flowers with many people. On November 2, 1933, he married Katherine S. Nicolai in Chelsea, and she preceded him in death on October 26, 2000. Survivors include three sons, Eugene of Dexter, Melvin of Chelsea, & Raymond (Mary) of Kalamazoo; 2 grandchildren, Matthew and Mark; a sister, Estelle Howell; a sister-in-law, Marjorie Raymond; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter. Funeral services were held Saturday, December 6, 2008, at 11:00 am at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea, with Rev. Curt DeMars-Johnson officiating. Burial was held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. The family received friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Friday 2-4 & 6-9 pm and at the church Saturday 10-11 am. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ.

 

bulletRobert "Bob" Vernon Abdon

of Chelsea, age 88, died Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at his home. He was born May 20, 1920 in Chelsea, the son of Frank Ellis and Myrtle (Craft) Abdon. Mr. Abdon was a WWII veteran having served 45 months in the Pacific. He was a former member of the V.F.W. and First Congregational Church in Chelsea. He retired from the Federal Screw Works in 1984 after 34 years. Bob was a kind, generous, family-oriented man who would do anything for anyone. He thought of others before himself. Bob thought the world of his family which included his daughter Teresa (James) Roberts of Brooklyn, MI; 2 grandchildren, Brittney and Carrie Roberts; 1 great-grandson, Trenton Ruttkofsky; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 5 sisters, Florence Gentner, Nellie Pierce, Elnora Wright, Ethel Abdon, and Oleta Abdon and 2 brothers, Richard and Russell "Bud" Abdon. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec.5 , 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Burial followed at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. The family will receive friends Thursday, from 4-8pm.

 

bulletThelma M. Adams

of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Ann Arbor, age 98, died Sunday, November 30, 2008 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born October 13, 1910 in Toledo, Ohio the daughter of Jess William and Marie Ida (Dolgner) Miller. Her family moved to Flint, Michigan where she attended public schools and business college.  On August 19, 1933 she married C. Francis Adams. They moved to northwest Detroit in 1939 where they raised their family. Thelma and Francis moved to Ann Arbor in 1977 and into the Glacier Hills Retirement Community in 1986. Francis preceded her in death on March 14, 1998. This past June, after living in Glacier Hills for 22 years, she moved to Towsley Village of the Chelsea Retirement Community to be near her son and daughter-in-law.  Thelma was a homemaker as well as a clerk and office manager for her husband, who was an accountant until his retirement in 1979. For many years in Detroit she was active in the local community, Westlawn Methodist Church, and PEO. She is a member of West Side United Methodist Church and PEO Chapter X in Ann Arbor.  Survivors include a son Gary (Janet) Adams of Chelsea, daughter Jean (Robert) Radway of Livonia, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one niece and one nephew. She was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth A. (Carolyn) Miller.  A private memorial service will be held with the family at a future date and her ashes will be interred at the West Side United Methodist Church Memorial Garden, Ann Arbor, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Side UMC Memorial Fund, 900 South Seventh St, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.  Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.

of Chelsea, age 93, died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at Silver Maples of Chelsea. She was born Nov. 23, 1915 in Woodbury, TN, the daughter of George A. & Lucy Boma (Jones) Melton. Mary lived in Chelsea for seven years, and was formerly of Smithville, TN and Detroit. She worked with her husband at Maxwell’s Refrigeration. She was a member of the New Short Mountain Methodist Church, and was proud to be the President of the Women’s Society at Campbell Avenue Methodist Church in Detroit. On June 18, 1937, she married Charlie Lee Maxwell in Smithville, TN, and he preceded her in death on May 31, 2005. Survivors include a son, Harold (Rose) Maxwell of Hartland, MI; a daughter, Judith (Fermin) Alonso of Chelsea; 5 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 1 brother, Waite Melton; 1 sister, Francis Moore, and many nieces & nephews. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Melton Cemetery, Short Mountain, Tennessee. bulletNancy Boggs Lambert

of Chelsea, Michigan, age 83, died Wednesday, November 26, 2008 at Chelsea  Community Hospital. Nancy was born August 28, 1925 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of George P. & Sara S. (Strange) Boggs. On February 14, 1948, she married Roy F. Lambert at the Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Willow Grove, PA, and he survives. Nancy was a graduate of University of Pennsylvania (BS) and Michigan State University (M.Ed). Residing in Waterford for 33 years, she taught elementary school for 23 years and was an active member of Lakeland United Presbyterian Church where her husband was pastor. After retirement, Roy and Nancy moved to Chelsea in 1992. They spent many joyous summers at their cottage on Torch Lake (Bellaire). Nancy was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Ann Arbor and attended the Church in the Hills in Bellaire. She was an avid gardener who loved her flowers. She loved children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nancy’s home was always full of music.Other survivors include a son, Timothy (Debbie) Lambert of Waterford; two daughters, Sara Lambert of Hamburg Township, Nancy Jean (Tibor Hortibagyi) Lambert of Greenville, NC; 5 grandchildren, Nicky Moore; Nathaniel, Kimberly and Cassandra Vachon; Marta Lambert; and 3 great-grandchildren, Skyler, Alexa, and Billy. She was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Boggs. A memorial service was held on Saturday December 27th, 11:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Ann Arbor, with Rev. Stephen Carl officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. Burial was at Westminster Memorial Garden, Ann Arbor. Chelsea, MI, formerly of Ann Arbor, age 99, died Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born August 6, 1909 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the daughter  of George & Elizabeth (Donaghan) Mason. Alice was a member of Saint Thomas and Saint Francis Catholic Churches in Ann Arbor. On October 31, 1931, she married Duane Farmer in Ann Arbor, and he preceded her in death on May 15, 1997. Survivors include one son, William (Adele) Farmer of Northville; two daughters, Martha (Jim) Newton of TX, Elizabeth ( Fred) Nielsen of WA; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lou Lee, and a son, James Farmer. A Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, December 2, at 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Dr. William Turner officiating. Burial followed at St. Thomas Cemetery, Ann Arbor. The family received friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Monday, December 1, from 4-9 pm with a rosary at 7:30 pm. Age 31, died Saturday, November 15, 2008. She was born May 26, 1977 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the daughter of Stephen and Trena Annette (Bentley) Erskine. Jessica was a 1995  graduate of Chelsea High School. She had attended Washtenaw Community College, working toward a nursing degree. Jessica had worked at Towsley Village at Chelsea Retirement Community, where she had a wonderful way with elderly people and was loved by their families. She loved animals her whole life, and always took in strays. Jessica had a huge heart, and was full of compassion. Survivors include her parents; her paternal grandparents, Dolores Erskine of Chelsea and Ralph Erskine of Kalkaska; her brother, Stephen Andrew Bentley Erskine of Chelsea; her aunts and uncles, Mike (Vickie) Erskine of Stockbridge, Sandy (Dan) Miller of Chelsea, Esther (James) Henningsen of Merritt Island, FL; dear friends, Amie, Rickelle, Beth, Rachel, Autumn, Jennifer; and many other friends and cousins. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Trent and Ruth Bentley; and her great-grandmother, Grandma Buku. Funeral services were held Wednesday, November 19, 1:00 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Burial was at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Waterloo, Michigan. Age 81, died Thursday, November 13, 2008 at Chelsea Community Hospital. She was born December 24, 1926 in Springfield, Illinois, the daughter of Joseph and Inez (Vance) McNamara.  Norma loved sewing, knitting, and handicrafts. She was a talented crafts person. She was an avid reader and excelled at crossword puzzles and Jeopardy.  She married Edward A. Moon on April 18, 1953 in Detroit, and he survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Carol (Mark) Jackson of Chelsea and Susan Moon of New York City; a son, Gordon Moon of New York.  Private visitation was held at Cole Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

 

 
bulletMichael Daggett-Bainton

Age 31, died Sunday, November 2, 2008. He was born April 24, 1977 in Pentwater, Michigan, the son of John Daggett & Sue (Roth) Daggett. Mike was a 1995 Chelsea High  School graduate. He graduated from Gogebic Community College in Ironwood and became an assistant ski manager at Schuss Mountain / Shanty Creek Ski Resort in the mid-90s. Later, he became a member of Operating Engineers Local 324, working for Lanaville Foundations Inc. His first love was his two children, but he also loved to hunt, fish, downhill ski, and he enjoyed his Harley Davidson. Survivors include his mother, Sue & Bill Bainton of Pentwater; his father, John & Kathy Daggett; a son, Everett Williams, and Everett's mother, Dawn & sister, Sarah; a daughter Madelynn Bainton and her mother, Jennifer Evans; his sister, Marti (Tim) Williams of Chelsea; brother, Jim (Danielle) Daggett of Michigan Center; and 6 nieces. A memorial service was held Wednesday, November 5, 11 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. The family received friends Tuesday from 4-7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bainton family to be placed in trust for Everett & Madelynn.

 

 
bulletEdward "Andrew" Risner

Age 41, died suddenly, due to natural causes on Sunday, November 2, 2008 at Allegiance Health in Jackson. He was born June 27, 1967 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Edward  & Maltie (Brown) Risner. Andrew had worked for Chelsea Rental, and for NSK for 15 years, but he called himself a truck driver. He liked hunting, golfing, and 4-wheeling. The most important thing to him was spending time with his girls. Survivors include 3 daughters, Sierra, Brooke & Elise Risner, all of Hamburg; their mother, Angel Hinkle; his father; 5 sisters, Faye (Harold) Clement of Danville, KY, Sandy (Rick) Castle of Stockbridge, Patty Turner (Jon Delamater) of Jackson, Kim (Pat) Risner of Chelsea, Alice Walz of Chelsea; many nieces and nephews, and his special nephews Deric and Dakota. He was preceded in death by his mother; sister, Marjorie Risner, and a brother, Henry Clay Risner. Funeral services were held Thursday, November 6, 12:30 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Burial followed at Maple Grove Cemetery in Sylvan Center. The family received friends Wed. 2-4 & 6-9 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the family.

Son of Jeffrey & Alvyta (Kazlauskaite) Haist, was stillborn on October 30, 2008. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother, Jonas; his paternal grandparents, Kenneth & Barbara Haist of Chelsea; his maternal grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Vytautas Kazlauskai of Vilnius, Lithuania.  A funeral service was held at Zion Lutheran Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Doris Sparks officiating. Burial took  place at the family plot at Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.

 

bulletDisa F. Vickrey

of  Belleville, MI, formerly of Chelsea, age 87, died Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at her sister's home in Chelsea after a short illness. She was surrounded by her loving sister, Wilma Picklesimer and beloved niece Thea Picklesimer and her niece Nancy Bevins whom she refereed to as her third daughter. She was born April 20, 1921 in Loyall, Kentucky, the daughter of Carter H. and Nancy (Bingham) Farley.  Disa retired from Federal Screw Works in Chelsea in 1976 and was a former member of High Street Baptist Church in Somerset, KY. She moved from Chelsea to Belleville in 1985.  She was an avid conversationalist, card player and she loved to travel. She also like to crochet and made many gifts for friends and family. In retirement she visited numerous points of interest in the United Stated with tour groups.  On December 14, 1935, Disa married Loran W. Vickrey in Keith, KY and he preceded her in death on May 11, 1980. Survivors include her daughter Brenda L. (Kenneth) Mullins of Tavares, FL; one sister, Wilma Picklesimer of Chelsea; 2 grandsons Gerald & Phillip; 1 great-granddaughter Ashley; as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one daughter Nowanna Patrica Fletcher; 4 brothers, Curtis, Lawrence, Luther and Hurlen; and 2 sisters, Adah Farley and Ethel Williams.  The family received friends at the Cole Funeral in Chelsea, MI on Saturday, Nov. 1, with a funeral at 11:00 am, with Pastor Dominic Aquilino officiating. Burial was Monday, Nov. 3, 11:00 am at Science Hill Cemetery, Science Hill, Kentucky. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.

 

bulletWilliam "Jeff" Bolgos

of  Dexter. MI, age 59, died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at University of Michigan Hospital. He was born August 27, 1949 in West Branch, Michigan, the son of Ivan & Marjorie (Jacobs) Bolgos. Jeff served in the Navy. He worked for U of M camps and the E. S. George Reserve. On September 12, 1970, he married Julie A. Eschelbach in Ann Arbor, and she survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Jessica Pantano of Austin, TX, Johanna (Aaron) Andersen of Manchester; a sister, Gale (Tom) Godfrey of Pinckney; a brother, Brad (Linda) Bolgos of Pinckney; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held Wednesday, October 29, 2:00 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Michael Eschelbach officiating. bulletErnest "Ernie" Smola

of  Ann Arbor, MI, Age 87, died Sunday, October 26, 2008 at University of Michigan Hospital. He was born May 22, 1921 in North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph & Jennie (Sistek) Smola.  Ernie was a Veteran of WWII. He worked at Ford for over 30 years, retiring in 1986. Ernie enjoyed woodworking.  Survivors include a brother, Louis "Smokey" Smola in Redlands, CA; a sister, Dorothy Smola of Newton, PA (formerly of Irwin/Hahntown); many nieces and nephews, Dan Fazioli Jr, Geri Bradley & Jennie Fazioli-Smith, Darryl Smola & Lois Ann Taylor, Donna Paredes, Larry Tokosh, Charlotte Tokosh-Glinski & Pastor Bobby Tokosh, Joseph Smola, Andy Smola, Marty Smola, Donald Lentz & Lori Greene; and two special friends, Nancy Kiel & June Parker. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; and 10 siblings, Josephine Sutherland, Florence Fazioli, Edward Smola, Charles Smola, James Smola, Robert Smola, Lucy Tokash, Clara Smola, Norman Smola, Viola Lentz.  According to his wishes, no services were held. of  Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Fenton, age 85, died Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born November 26, 1922 in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, the daughter of Ralph & Lena (Brown) Stewart.  Sylvia was active in the Fenton United Methodist Church. She was a volunteer for Suicide Prevention. She enjoyed art and loved to travel.  She married Raymond A. Beebe, and he preceded her in death in 1998. She is survived by her children, Michael Dion, Raymond (Mary Boland) Beebe Jr., Linda (James) Gibbs, Julie Martin, Jackie Beebe, Joy Beebe, and Ralph (Sally) Beebe; two sisters, Lorna Darling and Ilo Stewart; 9 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.  A memorial service was held Monday, October 27, 2:00 pm at Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village Chapel, with Rev. bulletMarjorie Claire Hirst Parrish

of  Chelsea, longtime resident of Livonia, died Saturday, October 18, 2008 at her daughter's  home. She was born July 14, 1913 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Charles & Clara (Thomas) Hirst. Marjorie was a long time resident of Livonia. She was an active member of the Newburg United Methodist Church of Livonia.  On December 2, 1950, she married Elliott Parrish in Detroit, and he preceded her in death in 1985. She is survived by a son, Stephen Parrish of Livonia; a daughter Melanie (Wallace) Hopp of Chelsea; 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Mason and Charles Hirst, and her sister Rose Mary Smith.  Funeral services were held Saturday, October 25, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Marie Kuykendall officiating. Burial followed at North Farmington Cemetery, Farmington Hills.  The family received friends from 10:00-11:00 before the service.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Huron Valley Humane Society PO Box 7026, Liberty Station, Ann Arbor, MI  48107-7026.

of  Chelsea, age 70, died Friday, October 17, 2008 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born February 8, 1938 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Adolph and Genevieve (Hencinski) Mallace. Diane has lived in Chelsea since 1974, and was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church. She owned her own travel agency Accent on Travel , in downtown Chelsea. She had many friends dating back to elementary school that she kept up with, and made more friends all her life. She was an enthusiastic volunteer on cancer walks, at nursing homes, and at St Louis School for boys.  On August 5, 1961 she married Thomas J. Killelea in Chicago, and he preceded her in death on June 10, 2008. Survivors include two sons, Michael (Susan) Killelea of Houston, Patrick (Leah) Killelea of Menlo Park, CA; two daughters, JoAnne (Paul) Brennan of Northville and Karen (Glenn) Vanneste of Chelsea; 9 grandchildren, Paige & Jack Killelea, Jacob & Genevieve Killelea, Stephanie & Patrick Brennan, Erica, Benjamin, & Anna Vanneste; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters Millicent and Irene.  A Funeral Mass was held Monday, October 20, 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea. A private burial was at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Chelsea. of  Grass Lake, age 89, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 12, 2008. She was born August 16, 1919 in Royalton, Kentucky, the daughter of Robert & Rainey (Arnett) Risner.  Sue was a wonderful homemaker, cook and seamstress. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, knitting, quilting, and crossword puzzles. She was a long-time member of the Grass Lake Assembly of God. Sue was a volunteer for the Chelsea Community Hospital and has received numerous awards. She was also a volunteer for many years at Faith in Action in Chelsea. She was an active Den Mother for Cub Scouts and 4-H leader for many years.  She married Walter F. Hoffman on June 4, 1942, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 22, 1984. She is survived by her children, Fayetta Arnett Patrick of Mt. Sterling, KY Russell Hoffman of Napoleon, Ronald Hoffman of Grass Lake, Mary (Richard) Kiel of Chelsea, Walter "Jeff" (Marjorie) Hoffman of Mancelona; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Nicole Kiel in 1982. The family would like to give a special thank you to Kathy, Natasha, and Carla of Southern Care Hospice, and to Lois Hendrex and Amber Koch for their loving care and support.  Funeral services were held Thursday , Oct. 16 , 11:00 am at Grass Lake Assembly of God, with Rev. of  Ann Arbor, MI, formerly of Chelsea and Howell, age 95, died Sunday, October 5, 2008 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born June 4, 1913 in Kangkei, Korea, where his parents, Clarence S. & Katherine Emma (Davies) Hoffman, were missionaries.  Dr. Hoffman earned his BA from Wooster College in Wooster, OH and his MD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1938. He interned at Henry Ford Medical Hospital and did his residency at Pontiac General, followed by 8 years of medical service with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in AZ and MT. He later practiced with the Byron Road Medical Group in Howell. Dr. Hoffman is a former member of the Howell First Presbyterian Church, Howell Gideons, and Howell Rotary. He is a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in AA. He has served as a missionary to China (1946-48) and a medical missionary to South Africa for the Evangelical Alliance (1976-77), an Elder, a Deacon, and adult Sunday School teacher.  On May 7, 1938, he married Mary Kepler in Philadelphia, PA on May 7, 1938, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 17, 2000. Other survivors include two daughters, Jeannette (Don) Faber of Ann Arbor, Katherine F. Hoffman of New York, NY; one son, Kenneth R. (Jan) Hoffman of Amherst, MA; one brother, Rev. Robert E. Hoffman of TN; two sisters, Katherine Stevens and Claire Barth, both of NJ; 6 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty and brother, John.  A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 22, 2008, 11:00 am at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1500 Scio Church Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103.  Arrangements were handled by Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea.

of  Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Ann Arbor, age 81, died peacefully Friday, October 3, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community (Towsley Village) surrounded by her family. She was born March 5, 1927 in Newark, New Jersey, the daughter of Alfred B. & Elizabeth S. (Reagan) Thomas.  Prior to moving to Chelsea Retirement Community, she had lived in Ann Arbor most of her life. Nancy received both her Bachelors and Masters from the University of Michigan and worked for many years as a social worker for Catholic Social Services. As a member of the Washtenaw County Historical Society, Nancy spent many years volunteering at Cobblestone Farm, Kempf House, and the Museum on Main. She also volunteered with the Ann Arbor Art Association and the Turner Geriatric Center.  On May 12, 1951, she married David K. McKinney in Ann Arbor, and he preceded her in death on January 30, 2003. She is survived by 5 children, Karrick (Rita) McKinney of Mt. Vernon, OH, Susan (Duncan) Steel of Chelsea, Manette (David) London of Chelsea, Thomas McKinney of Sequim, WA, Barrie "Pippa" (Mark) McKinney-Vorobiev of Ann Arbor; a brother, Alfred B. (JoAnne) Thomas Jr. of Bergenfield, NJ; and 3 grandchildren, Allison, Brendan, and Ian.   A memorial service was held Friday, October 10, 2:00 pm at Chelsea Retirement Community, Towsley Village Chapel, with Rev. of  Dexter,  Michigan, age 84, died Friday, October 3, 2008 at Chelsea Community  Hospital. He was born December 18, 1923 in Hart, Michigan, the son of Charles Raymond and Bessie Mae (Ferguson) North.  Charles served in the United States Air Force from 1942 - 1945 as a pilot and flight instructor. He then attended University of Michigan, earning his Bachelors of Science Electrical Engineering Degree in 1947. A professional engineer in the power and energy field, he was Past President and co-owner of Cummins & Barnard, Inc where he worked for over thirty years. He was a Past President of Ann Arbor Country Club and was active in the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor.  On November 11, 1945, he married Evelyn Louise Kurtz at Peoples Church in East Lansing and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Bruce Charles North and James Russell (Andrea) North, both of Dexter; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter Kathryn Susan North Herrera in 2008; and three sisters Dorothy May Smith of Plymouth, Marguerite Winifred Stanton of Hart, and Evelyn Fox of Shelby.  Cremation has taken place. A family gathering for interment will be at Washtenong Memorial Park at a later date. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.

Age 73, died Monday, September 29, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born November 2, 1934 in Plymouth, Michigan, the daughter of Clark and Joan (Claus) Sackett.  Dorothy served her country in the US Navy and worked as a LPN at Great Lakes Naval Hospital. She enjoyed china painting at the Chelsea Senior Center. She was an electrologist who owned Chelsea Electrology.  On September 5, 1959, she married Carl H. Pfitzenmaier in Plymouth, MI, and he survives. Other survivors include a son, Clark Carlton (Kelley) Pfitzenmaier; a daughter, Carla Dawn (Bronson) Ellis of Clinton; three grandchildren, Christin, Katelynn, and Kayla Pfitzenmaier; five nieces and nephews; a brother, Richard (Susan) Sackett of South Lyon. She was preceded in death by her parents and a step-sister, Leola Sackett Rose. The family is appreciative of the care provided by the staff of Chelsea Retirement Community (K-2).  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct 1, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Dale Grimm officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove East Cemetery, Chelsea. The family will receive friends Wednesday 10-11 am. of Chelsea, formerly of Dexter, age 71, died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born December 13, 1936 in Salem Township, Michigan, the son of Louis W. & Alma L. (Inglehart) Esch.  Lester worked for Chelsea Milling Company for 40 years, retiring in 1999. He enjoyed caring for his lawn and flowers.  On February 16, 1963, he married Carole Gaddis, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughter, Doris Esch of Chelsea; 3 brothers, Walter (Mary) Esch of Ann Arbor, Eugene (Norma) Esch of Chelsea, Ronald (Marge) Esch of Munith; 2 sisters, Alice Hadley of Chelsea, Dorothy (John) Milan of Dexter; a brother-in-law, Alvin Brassow of CA; several nieces and nephews, and close friends Doug Frey and Inez Fouty-Buttons. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Margaret Guinan, Shirley Brassow, Betty Esch, and Doris Esch.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 2, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. of Chelsea, Michigan, age 98,  died September 23, 2008 at Towsley Village of Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born in Farwell, MI and was a graduate of Western Michigan University. She married Dr. James Roland Uhlinger, a Methodist minister, serving churches in Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, and a District Superintendent of the New England Conference. Mrs Uhlinger was active in church and community affairs, a member of the PEO, and held offices in Davenport (IA) Women's Club and the YMCA/YWCA. She was also a delegate to the World Methodist Conference in London, England. She was a member of the Clearwater (FL) United Methodist Church for 30 years, prior to moving to Michigan. Mrs Uhlinger is survived by two daughters, Barbara Jean Guenther Kuder of Wimberley, TX, and Dr. Carolyn Ann Shantz of Ortonville, MI; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Susan Jane Uhlinger; and sisters, Florence M. Jerrett and Dorothy M. Manning.  A memorial service will be held at Chelsea Retirement Community on Saturday, October 4, at 2:00 pm in the Towsley Village Chapel. Age 83, died peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, September 23, 2008 at his home. He was born March 16, 1925 in Bradley, KY , the son of Coyne & Sarah (Howard) Salyer. Harold served in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He served as the President of the UAW Local 437. Harold retired from Dana Corp. after 30 years. In 1973, he married Myrna "Peggy" Stanley and she survives. Other survivors include his children, Donald Salyer, Judy (John) Hufziger, Vickie (Robert Jr.) Rudd, Connie (Stan) Hall, Pamela Dalton, David Stephens; his brothers and sisters, Helen Whisman, Hortense Patrick, Hannah Adams, Herman (Joy) Salyer, Faye (Eugene) Steffins, Jan (Max) Arnett, David Salyer, Bobby (Pauline) Salyer; 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Stephens, a grandson, Lance Zeller, and his siblings, Jerry Salyer, Joyce Grooms, and Hershel Salyer. Age 84, died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at her home. She was born August 5, 1924 in  Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Henry W. & Cyrilla (Spangelo) Locken. At 3 lbs, 5 oz, she was the smallest baby to survive at the Minneapolis hospital where she was born. Dr. Locken graduated from Scott High School in Toledo, OH. She graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950, where she earned her medical degree. Dr. Locken earned her ophthalmology degree at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. Dr. Locken was an ophthalmologist who ran her own practice in Dexter. She was an United Methodist, member of the AMA, and the Michigan State Medical Society. An avid outdoorswoman, she loved to ski, canoe, scuba dive, and sail. Dr. Locken loved the arts, and was an excellent painter.  She married Clarence Wendell "Rip" Pendley on Jan. 5, 1980, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 1996. Survivors include a nephew, Andy H. Locken, (Leslie) of Bermuda Dunes, California and niece, Karen Locken, of Trinity, California and first cousin Judy Helsel of Toledo, Ohio. She was preceded in death by a brother, Andy M. Locken.  The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 17 from 5-9 pm, Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 18 , 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Steve Bringardner officiating. Burial will be at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, Toledo, Ohio. The family extends their gratitude to Gail's "family" of care providers Briggit Nicholson and her husband Ray, who was a long time and dear friend of Gail's, and to Sabrina, Florence, and Dorothy, Jessica, Brenda, and Kay, for their dedication, love and excellent care provided to Gail in the last years of her life. of Ann Arbor, age 81, died Sunday, September 14, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born September 5, 1927 in Milan, Michigan, the son of Bernard B. and Ruby Crawford.  Parky served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a longtime member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, and he felt privileged to have served on church boards and offices. He also belonged to the Farm Bureau. Parky was employed as an electronic technician at Sarns/3M. He created jewelry for the Ann Arbor Street Fair for eleven years.  He married Mildred "Micki" Bersuder on September 12, 1947 at Salem Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor, MI and she survives. Other survivors are two daughters, Judy (Michael)Thornton of Milan, MI, and Donna (Daniel) Schmidt of Ann Arbor, MI; a sister, Susan Sweet of Naples, FL; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Evelyn Kennedy & Doris Hoffman.  Funeral services will be held Friday, Sept. 19, 11:00 am at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7474 Scio Church Road, Ann Arbor, with Rev. Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, has called Mary Lou Turner, beloved mother, grandmother, and "Nana" home with Him and her darling husband, Bob, who preceded her in death in 2001 after 54 years of marriage. On Sept. 13, 2008 her victory over pancreatic cancer was won. She was born on November 10, 1927, in South Bend, Indiana, the precious daughter of Robert Gerald O’Daniel and Madeleine (Haydan) O'Daniel. Mary Lou lived in the Chelsea/ Ann Arbor area most of her married life. Her delight was her family, the "lunch bunch", and Chelsea Free Methodist Church family, where she was an active member. Serving her church as greeter and a member of the Stewards' Committee, as well as belonging to her Small Group Bible Study, was her passion. Her gifts were hospitality and serving, and she did these with grace. She will be missed but will forever be in our hearts.  Loved family survivors include three children, Patti (Mark) Musolf of Chelsea, Sandy (Keith) Siefker of Celebration, FL, Rob (Juli) Turner of Chelsea; six grandchildren, Krista (Mike) Jarvey, Kelly Stephens, Mandy Siefker, Brandon Seifker, Madeleine and Molly Turner; four great-grandchildren, Hope Stephens, Clayton, Caden, and Cailee Jarvey; and Godchild, Charlene Wharton.  Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, 11:00 am at Chelsea Free Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Lyons officiating. of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Ypsilanti, age 71, died Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor. He was born November 10, 1936 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Clayton S. and Violet (Smith) Russ. Stan worked at Eastern Michigan University as an electrician for twenty-two years, retiring in 1999.  Survivors include three sisters, Carol (Marshall) Edman of Cheboygan, Marilyn Gibson of Dexter, and Judy (Jerry) Pace of Chelsea; a special friend, Tonette Popaneti of Coral Springs, FL; two nieces, and six nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.  A time to celebrate Stan’s life will be held at a future date. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Ann Arbor. Age 58, died unexpectedly Wednesday, September 10, 2008 in Ann Arbor. He was born  October 4, 1949 in Ann Arbor, MI, the son of John and Bernice (Harvey) Stone. Robert graduated from Dexter High School in 1967. He was an Army Veteran, serving from 1969-71. Robert was a mechanic with Henderson Ford (later Varsity Ford) and other local dealers. He is survived by his sister, Susan (Peter) Rantz of Saline, his brother, Jeffery of Lebanon, TN; nieces and nephews, Jeffrery Stone, Renee Brown, and Brian Stone. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 13, 12:00 noon at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. A private burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea.

Age 22, died Saturday, September 6, 2008 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born August 10, 1986 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the son of Doug & Sue (Heller) Rodgers. Ben graduated from Chelsea High School in 2004, where he played football and wrestled. He was a baptized and confirmed member of Zion Lutheran Church. Ben was active in 4H, the Steer Club and Lamb Club. Ben attended Central Michigan University. He farmed with his grandfather, Bob Heller, and was also a partner with him selling seed corn for Midwest Seeds. Ben currently worked at McCalla Feeds. He was active with the Washtenaw County Livestock and Dairy Council. In addition to his parents, he is also loved by his brother, Austin, and his sister Alyssa, both of Chelsea; maternal grandparents Robert & Else Heller of Chelsea; paternal grandmother Patricia Rodgers and the late Charles Rodgers of Linden; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 10, 11:00 am at Chelsea Fairgrounds, with Rev. Doris Sparks officiating. The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel, Tuesday, 2-8 pm. of Chelsea, formerly of Ann Arbor. Age 85, died Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. Ruth was born in 1923 in Adrian, Michigan, the daughter of Pawson & Blanche (Wellhauser) Baily.  Ruth graduated from Adrian College with a B.A. in Sociology and received her B.S. in Nursing from the University of Michigan. She was a nursing arts instructor and worked as a private office nurse for a local physician for 20 years, retiring in 1982. In 1950 she married Harvey Bennett, they had a loving marriage of 59 years. Ruth was an active member of the United Methodist Women and Chancel Choir for many years at First United Methodist Church of Ann Arbor where she was a member for over 50 years. She was also a Girl Scout Leader for several years. Ruth loved music, and enjoyed singing in addition to playing the organ, piano, and violin. She was also a traveler, camper, birder, reader, and enjoyed needlework.  A loving and devoted wife to Harvey and dear mother to her four children, Cheryl (Brian) Fox, Craig (Deborah) Bennett, Christopher Bennett, and Clark Bennett, Ruth was also loved by grandchildren Eric and Adam Fox, and Brian, Anne, Carol Ruth, and Elizabeth Bennett. Ruth is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other family. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Harold, and her sons Christopher and Clark.  A memorial service will be in the Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Chelsea Retirement Community Memorial Fund or the charity of your choice. of Ann Arbor, age 60, died Thursday, August 28, 2008 at Saint Joseph Hospital in Ann  Arbor. He was born January 8, 1948 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the son of J. Donald and Arlesta M. (Roderick) Alexander.  Larry was a US Army Veteran and worked at the Ypsilanti State Hospital / Center for Forensic Psychiatry.  Survivors include two brothers, James of Chelsea and Dan of Manchester; three sisters, Michelle Roderick of Ann Arbor, Dora Nice of AZ, and Nancy Shewmak of OK; several aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews; a very special friend, Mike; and Craig, who is like one of the family. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Eddie.  A memorial service will be held Sunday, Sept 7, 3:00 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with visitation from 2-3 pm. A private burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Chelsea.  Memorial contributions may be made to local soup kitchens, local homeless shelters, HIV/AIDS organizations, or in essence anyone or any organization who is less fortunate and needs help most.

Age 56, died August 17, 2008 at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor after a year-long, hard-fought battle with Esophageal Cancer. He was born in Jackson, Michigan, the son of Victor W. & Gladys M. (Runciman) Winter.  David has lived in Chelsea most of his life, graduating from Chelsea High in 1970. He earned a BBA-Accounting from Eastern Michigan University. David made a 31 year career at the University of Michigan in the Financial Operations Department. He enjoyed attending auctions and spending time at his cottage on Silver Lake, where he especially enjoyed fishing. David will mostly be remembered for the laughter and smiles he brought to those around him. He taught us all to laugh. His motto in life was: Live, Laugh, Love.  In 1982 he married Diane M. Hinkley at her parent’s home in Ann Arbor, and she survives. Other survivors include his son, Michael Winter of Chelsea; a sister, Mary Ann Winter of Dexter; several aunts, uncles; and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.  A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, August 20, 2008, at 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel in Chelsea, with Rev. Mearl Bradley officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Waterloo. The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Monday 2-4 & 6-9 pm and Tuesday 2-4 & 6-9 pm. Age 86, died Thursday, July 31, 2008 at Riverwind Senior Assisted Living Residence in Williamston. He was born July 22, 1922 in Castorland, New York, the son of Harold L. & Martha A. (Zehr) Chaffee. Paul worked with his wife in dairy & herd testing. He participated in the Mennonite Church and attended Scio Community Church. He was the Secretary / Treasurer for the Michigan Holstein Association for many years. Paul liked to make maple syrup from his trees. On November 25, 1948, he married Alta Pauline Miller in Fairview, MI, and she preceded him in death on January 10, 2005. Other survivors include two daughters, Barbara Chaffee of Depot Bay, Oregon, Janette (Ronny) McCarter of Fowlerville; three sons, Jonathan Chaffee of Jackson, Timothy (Brenda Raham) Chaffee of Saline, Lawrence (Claudia) Chaffee of Ann Arbor; 7 grandchildren, Michael, Nichole & Robyn Chaffee, Adam & Jacob Chaffee, and Kyle & Emily McCarter, a sister-in-law, Minnie Chaffee. He was preceded in death by his sister, Clover L. Farrance, and his brother, Lloyd. L. Chaffee. Funeral services were held Monday, August 4, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Age 87, of Chelsea, formerly of Ann Arbor,  died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born March 20, 1921 in Buffalo, New York, the daughter of George & Luella (Kelly) Dean.  Georgine graduated from Kenmore, NY High School in 1939, and attended New York State Teachers College from 1939-1943. She was employed as a lab technician at Linde Air Products in Tonawanda, NY from 1943-1945. Georgine moved to Ann Arbor in 1975. She was active in the AAUW (American Association of University Women) and their work to encourage women of all ages in their studies in higher education. Georgine received her Masters from U of M in gerontology.  On September 29, 1945, she married Robert G. Craig, and he preceded her in death on April 24, 2003. She is survived by three daughters, Susan Craig of Santa Monica, CA, Barbara Craig and her husband, Jack Burgess of Tigard, OR, Katherine Craig of Sacramento, CA; two grandchildren, Andrew and Allyssa Burgess; a nephew, Peter Lilga; a grand-niece, Dawn Lilga; and a grand-nephew, Aaron Lilga. She was preceded in death by a sister, Vivian Lilga. She spent the last five years of her life at Chelsea Retirement Community where she received wonderful care from the entire staff.  Funeral services were held Friday, August 1, 10:30 am at Chelsea Retirement Community (Towsley Village Chapel), with Rev. Beth Foster officiating. Age 69, died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at his daughter's home in Pinckney. He was born  October 21, 1938 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the son of Marvin E. & Pauline M. (Davison) Miller.  David served in the US Marines from 1956-58. He worked for RF Day Construction until his retirement. He was also a former part-owner of Ann Arbor Welding Supply.  Survivors include two daughters, Susan Miller of Pinckney and Kristen (Jim) Boccher of Dexter; one brother, Donald M. (Angela) Miller of Grass Lake; two grandchildren, Jack Boccher and Michael Lams. David was formerly married to Barbara (Hartman) Andres. Age 83, died Thursday, July 24, 2008 in Saline, Michigan. She was born July 14, 1925 in Iron River, Michigan, the daughter of William and Gertrude Marie (Tackmier) LaVeau. Lorraine was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Dexter, the Dexter American Legion Auxiliary, and the Ann Arbor Eagles. On May 30, 1943, she married William Aiken, Jr. in Stambaugh, Michigan and he preceded her in death on October 22, 1992. Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Lewis) Feeman of Dexter, and Debbie (Mel) Carreira of Hudson, FL.; a sister, Marguerite (Albert) Angeli of Iron River; 3 grandchildren, Danny (Tracy) Feeman, Melissa Feeman, Eric (Valerie) Boham, and Chad (Jen) Boham; 7 great-grandchildren, Ed Feeman, Nicole Feeman, Ashlee Feeman, Zach Feeman, Taylor Feeman, Trevor Feeman, and Vanden Boham; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Billy Aiken, and a grandson, Keith Feeman. Age 91, died suddenly Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Chelsea Community Hospital. He was born May 13, 1917 in Shepherd, Michigan, the son of Charles and Pearl (Wilson) Barker.  Dale was a World War II veteran serving in the Air Force. He worked twenty one years at Chrysler, retiring in 1975. He was a member of the American Legion and the UAW.  He married Norma M. Girven on July 8, 1946 in Lansing, Michigan, and she survives. Other survivors include two sons, Douglas (Sheila) Barker of Jackson, Dennis (Melinda)Barker of Swartz Creek; a daughter, Debra Barker of Hartland; two grandchildren, Dawn and Denise; 5 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.  Funeral services were held Friday, July 25, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Age 87, of Chelsea, MI, formerly of San Diego, CA, age 87, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at his home at the Pines in Chelsea. He was born January 10, 1921 in Detroit. He lived in Detroit, then spent 22 years in San Diego, CA.  Upon retirement Lou spent summers in Northern Michigan and winters I at home in California proclaiming he had the best of both worlds. He moved to the Pines in April 2006. Mr. Rose was a proud IBEW member of Local 58 receiving his 65 year pin this spring. He retired from The City of Detroit Electrical Inspection Division where he was a Supervising Inspector. A WWII Navy Veteran he served in the South Pacific as an Electricians Mate. Lou was proud that he could build or fix anything. He built a summer home in Northern Michigan where he loved to fly fish. He was also an accomplished bowler, golfer and he and his beloved wife Ruth were known as beautiful ballroom and square dancers. He was a true animal lover, his best friend being his Golden Retriever “Mo” who will forever grieve his passing.  On March 23, 1945, he married Ruth Mustonen in Detroit, and she preceded him in death in 1995 after 50 years of marriage. Survivors include two daughters, Tina (Bob) Patterson of Stockbridge, Lori Rose (Phil) Gianatasio of Marble Head, MA; one son, Barry "Peter" Rose of Detroit; two granddaughters, Rachel & Chloe Gianatasio; two grandsons, Trevor & Andrew Patterson; and several nieces and nephews, and special friend, Pearl Lilyard of Virginia. No public services will be held. Burial will be at Oak Grove East Cemetery in Chelsea. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. Age 79, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at his home, where he had lived since 1957. He was  born April 21, 1929 in Howell, Michigan, the son of Stephen H. & Ethel M. (Fletcher) Aldrich. Bill was a US Army Veteran during the Korean War, serving in Japan. He worked for Chrysler Proving Grounds for 34 years, retiring in 1989. Bill was a member of the American Legion Post 31, a member of the Chelsea First United Methodist Church, and was a former member of the Chrysler Engineering Group. Bill loved motorcycles, and took several long trips with Ella. On June 17, 1954, he married Ella M. Van Amberg in Angola, IN, and she survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Stephanie (Gregory) Osborne of Chelsea; two sons, William S. Aldrich Jr. of Stockbridge, and Donald Aldrich of Denver, CO; a sister, Dorothy "Dee" (Frank) Rivara of Sedona, AZ; 3 grandchildren, James Osborne, William S. Aldrich III, Shawnda Aldrich; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Leah Straub and Helen Sprague. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 12, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Joy Barrett officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Howell. Mrs. Benner lived in Oak Park, Northville, South Lyon, and Carleton She was a member of Carleton United Methodist Church and the Lady Shriners.  On Dec. 17, 1941, she married Sam Brenner in Windsor, Ontario, and he preceded her in death in 1998. Survivors include a son, Rev. Robert (Joyce) Brenner of Carleton; a daughter, Susan (Bill) Lyons of Windsor; four grandchildren, Rebecca (Jonathan) Grocki, William Lyons, Samantha Lyons, Curtis Lyons; one great-granddaughter, Abigail Grocki; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Brenner.  Funeral services were held Thursday, July 10, 11:00 at Chelsea Retirement Community (Towsley Village Chapel), with Rev. Judy Lynn Doll

A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 12 at 11:00 am at the Forest  Hill Cemetery in Houghton, Michigan. Anyone wishing to pay their final respects to Judy are welcome to attend.  Judy died unexpectedly in her sleep, Tuesday, December 25, 2007. She was born March 9, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jean (Dexter) and Albert E. Doll Jr. Judy grew up in the U.P. She had lived in Ann Arbor for a year, and Chelsea for 8 years. Judy worked for U of M Hospital in the psychiatry department. She enjoyed her children, and being outdoors. Judy was a 20 year survivor of leukemia and had a kidney transplant. She is survived by her fiance, Ron Bembeneck of Ann Arbor, MI. Other survivors include her mother, Jean Doll of Westland, MI, two children, Matthew Doll of Ypsilanti and Chelsea Fernstrum of Ann Arbor; 4 brothers, David (Kathy) of Hancock, MI, Doug of Clinton Twp., John (Janet) of Clinton Twp., Tom "Ticker" of Monroe; a sister, Susan Houle of Hancock, MI; step-daughters, Erin Bembeneck of Whitmore Lake, Leslie (Jared) Wacker of Chelsea; a step-granddaughter, Elisabeth Wacker; several nieces and nephews, and many, many friends. Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Troy and Rochester Hills.  Age 73, died Friday, July 4, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ypsilanti. She was born March 1, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Clyde & Bertha (Davis) Baker.Marge earned her Bachelors and Masters degrees from Wayne State University. She taught for 32 years at Royal Oak Elementary Schools, retiring in 1994. Marge was a member of Chelsea Free Methodist Church. She volunteered at Chelsea Community Hospital, and was active with the Chelsea Senior Citizens. She enjoyed traveling, and had been to Greece, China and the Arctic, Marge loved writing poetry and short stories. She also enjoyed doing calligraphy.  Survivors include two daughters, Laura (Kelly) Kerr and Carol (Jeff) Bradley; one sister, Evelyn Moonan of San Diego, CA; three grandchildren, Jamin, Jaron and Joel Bradley.  Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 8, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Mearl Bradley officiating. She was born October 14, 1924 in Salyersville, KY, the daughter of Kash & Dorothy (Watkins) Arnett.  Vera attended Moorehead State College. She worked at Associated Springs where they made auto parts. Vera was a member of the First Baptist Church.  On June 29,1946, she married Hade Montgomery in Salyersville, KY, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 1982. She is survived by a two daughters, Dorothy (Al Hartman) Montgomery of Covington, KY, Eula (Lloyd) Eddy of Chelsea; two sons, Charles (Sue Bareis) Montgomery of Chelsea, James Montgomery of Manchester; a brother, Dr. Edsel (Lois) Arnett of Lexington, KY; 10 grandchildren; Margie (Lyle) Portice, Vera (Danny) Pratt, Lloyd (Anne) Eddy, Christopher Montgomery, Bridgett (Mark) Cramston, Katrina (Jeff) Kolman, James Montgomery, Kandice (Dustin) Montgomery, Ronnie Clay, Kamber Montgomery; and 7 1/2 great-grandchildren, Alec, Sarah, Rebecca, Faith, Elliot, Kelsey, Mason, and one on the way. of Chelsea, age 68, died Friday, June 27, 2008 in Ann Arbor. Fran was born in 1939 to Sidney and Marion (Gans) Given in Brattleboro, Vermont and raised in Northfield, Massachusetts.  She worked part-time starting at the age of 11 (it was allowed way back then) and retired in 2007.  In 1959 she married David Carstens and moved to Michigan. In 1977 she married Ronald Zatorski at which time she moved to and fell in love with Chelsea. She served as the clerk for the Village Planning Commission, Village Clerk from 1999 through 2001, and clerk for the City Charter Commission.  Fran served on the Board of Directors for the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce for six years and was a charter member of their Ambassador Group, as a member of the CATS Board , and for a short time as the secretary of the Chelsea Chapter of AARP.  She is survived by her husband and two children, Scott Carstens of Ann Arbor and Lynn (Mike) Szeles of Grass Lake; four grandchildren, Sydney Szeles and Max Szeles of Grass Lake, Taylor Carstens and Natalie Carstens of Kenosha, Wisconsin; her sister Dorothy (Don) Clough of Georgia; her brother, Fred Given of New Hampshire; sister-in-laws Phyllis Given of Maine, Connie (Ed) Zatorski of Texas, brother-in-law Walter Zatorski of Eastpointe; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, Edmund and Gladys (Theil) Zatorski; a brother Sidney Given; a sister, Barbara Levasseur; and brother-in-laws, Donald Levasseur and Edmund Zatorski, Jr.  One of her favorite sayings was: Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride". We'll miss her, but don't be sad... smile at the fact that you knew her!  The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 2, from 1-4 & 6-9 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. bulletPaul Reuben "Gil" Jukuri

of Jackson,  formerly of Westland and Detroit, age 92, died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at Jackson, Michigan. He was born January 22, 1916 in Allouez, Michigan, the son of Finnish immigrant parents, Henry and Ida (Kumpalainen) Jukuri.  Paul was the last surviving child of 11 children. He first drove at the age of 13, and saw his first movie, King Kong, at the age of 17. He started as a teamster, using horses to haul logs, maple syrup and build roads. He worked for Burroughs Corp. for over 40 years, retiring in 1978. Paul was in the 96th Infantry, "the Deadeyes", during WWII. He earned the Bronze Star for his service in Leyte and Okinawa. Paul lived in Holliday Park Townhouse in Westland for 20 years. He was a member of the Finnish Center in Farmington Hills, where he called bingo and tended bar. Paul loved ice skating and was an avid golfer. He was outgoing and made friends easily. He had the knack of running into friends everywhere.  He married Gertrude Susan Lampi in Detroit on August 29, 1942 and she preceded him in death on July 16, 1964. He is survived by three daughters, Susan Schillinger of Gainsville, FL, Kathryn "Kate" Jukuri of Jackson, Mary Louise (Robert Bieszka) Jukuri of Dexter; 2 grandchildren, Christine Mendoza and James Bieszka; 2 great-grandchildren, Kesiah and Lowen Mendoza; and special friend Margo Morsehead. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Hannah, Hilja, Martha, Sylvia, Vera, Mae, Eva, John, Eino, and Bill.  A memorial service was held Sunday, June 22, at 2:30 pm. at the Finnish Center, 35200 West Eight Mile Road, Farmington, Hills, MI 48335. of Ann Arbor, age 61, died Thursday, June 12, 2008 at her home after a long struggle with Shy-Drager Syndrome. She was born August 1, 1946 in Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, the daughter of Roland & Annie Mae (McGee) Price.  Eleanor studied nursing at the University of North Carolina (Tarheels), working in Neurosurgery. She began working as a flight attendant at Republic and Northwest Airlines in the early 1970's. She delighted in flying with the airlines and dearly loved to fly international routes until her illness made it impossible, and she retired in February, 2007 after 34 years.  On May 26, 1977, she married Paul G. Denton in Ann Arbor, and he survives. Other survivors include a sister, Linda (Keith) Rockafellow of Iron Mountain; four step-children, Charles, Paula, Laura, and Thomas Denton; four step- grandchildren, Jeremy, Megan, Kyler, and Paul. She was preceded in death by her parents.  Funeral services were held Monday, June 16, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, Michigan with Rev. Keith Rockafellow officiating.  of Chelsea, age 75, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital  from          complications of leukemia. He was born February 3, 1933 in Chicago, IL, the son of  Vincent & Leah (Egan) Killelea.  Tom had lived in Chelsea since 1974. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. Tom was the youngest of eight children, the first in his family to graduate from college. He was an engineer who worked for Argon National Laboratory, Chrysler, and Bechtel. He was also a professional handwriting analyst. Tom was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church. He was a passionate golfer who passed on his love of golf to his grandchildren.  On August 5, 1961 he married Diane S. Mallace in Chicago, and she survives. Othe survivors include two sons, Michael (Susan) Killelea of Houston, Patrick (Leah) Killelea of Menlo Park, CA; two daughters, JoAnne (Paul) Brennan of Northville and Karen (Glenn) Vanneste of Chelsea; a sister, Rosemarie Murany; a brother, James; 9 grandchildren, Paige & Jack Killelea, Jacob & Genevieve Killelea, Stephanie & Patrick Brennan, Erica, Benjamin, & Anna Vanneste; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Francis, Raymond, & John, and 2 sisters, Connie Killelea and Imelda DeEspinosa.  The Funeral Mass was held Friday, June 13, 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea. Burial will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Chelsea.  The family received friends at Cole Funeral Chapel on Thursday from 6-8 pm. of Manchester, Michigan, age 84, died Sunday, June 8, 2008 at her home. She was born July 21, 1923 near Salyersville, Kentucky, the daughter of Henry & Laura (Prater) Eastep. She has resided in the Chelsea area since 1957.  On November 14, 1944, she married Bishop Russell in Salyersville, KY, and they were married 52 happy years before he preceded her in death on Feb. 22, 1997. Survivors include a daughter Judith (Tim) Ehnis of Grass Lake; 2 sons Lanny (Kathie) Patrick of Manchester, Kenneth Patrick of Jackson; 8 grandchildren, Christi Hayman, Patrick Ehnis, and Angie Shankland, Tracy Stahl and Linsey Patrick, Heather Owens, Keith Patrick, and Karlee Patrick; 6 great-grandchildren, Ben, Clay, Morgan, Wyatt, Griffin, and Spencer; 2 sisters, Alta Borders of Mt. Sterling, OH, Ethel Gross of Cridersville, OH; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Frieda Garrison, and 2 brothers, Joe Estep and Glen Eastepp. Mrs. Patrick's family was the center of her life.   Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 11, 11:00 am at Magoffin County Funeral Home in Salyersville, KY. Age 91, died Sunday, June 8, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born April 21, 1917 in Detroit, the son of Frank and Pauline (Siposh) Kuharich.  Frank graduated from Cass Tech High School in Detroit and then from General Motors Institute with a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was an active fraternity member of Gil Gas. His career included working for General Motors Fisher Body Division. Retiring after 37 years. During WW II he worked for North American Aviation where he was a contributing engineer for the development of the B25 Mitchell and P51 Mustang. He was an active member of Central Methodist Church in Detroit and in his golden years Hillside Wesleyan Church in Fort Gratiot. All of us have been touched by his loving and giving nature. May we each remember these things.  On October 9, 1949, he married Genevieve Helen Mallette and she preceded him in death on August 18, 1995. We saw his faith in action as he watched his wife suffer with Alzheimer's Disease. Survivors include a son, Kenneth Frank (Kathleen) Kuharich of West Bloomfield; a daughter, Carol Dianne (John) Vegh of Port Huron; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren;  a sister, Pearl Pauline Kuharich of CA; and two nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Charles Nicholas Kuharich. Age 94, died Saturday, June 7, 2008 in Chelsea, MI. She was born November 5, 1913 in Lakewood, OH, the daughter of Howard C. and Carrie (Chamberlain) Ward. Beloved wife of John P. Simpson, who preceded her in death on November 27, 2001; sister of Howard C. Ward, Jr. of Schenectady, NY; loving mother of Laura K. Bosworth (Monty Schultz) of Tucson, AZ and Ned J. (Katherine) Simpson of Ann Arbor, MI; dear grandmother of Kai N. (William) Youngblood, Keenan W. Bosworth and Allison E. Simpson; great-grandmother of Mariah and Jazmin Youngblood; devoted Godmother to William C. Beckenbach (Mary); and "grandma" to Katie and Judy Beckenbach and Halle McCormick (Andrew). Kathryn devoted her life to nurturing loving relationships with scores of family members and friends across the country, including many in her native Ohio as well as in Harrodsburg, KY where she and John made their home from 1971 to 1988, and in Chelsea, MI where she lived the past 7 years. A lifelong writer of prose, poetry, and plays, she spent many years in the Euclid, OH Three Arts Club. In 2005 she was delighted by Chelsea South Meadows School’s presentation of one of her plays, and more recently she deeply treasured the fellowship of friends in the Chelsea Silver Maples Writers’ Group. A woman of deep faith, Kathryn was a devoted and very active member of East Shore United Methodist Church in Euclid, OH. She grew as a member of the Planners Class and served God and her community in myriad ways, including launching East Shore’s Logos program. While living in Michigan, she became a special friend of Ann Arbor’s Westminster Presbyterian Church. A celebration of Kathryn's life was held at 3:30 pm Sunday, June 29 at East Shore United Methodist Church, 23002 Lake Shore Blvd. Euclid, OH 44123. Roland "Rolly" A. White, a longtime resident of Chelsea, died Friday, June 6, 2008. He was 88 years old. Rolly was born on March 13, 1920, in Durand, Michigan. He was the son of Byron A. and Berneice (Fonger) Chubb. He attended school in Chelsea, graduated from Chelsea High School in 1939, and attended Ann Arbor Secretarial School. Rolly enlisted in the US Army in 1943, serving first in the 129th Cavalry Squadron, Fort Riley, Kansas then transferred to the Transportation Corps OCS in New Orleans, Louisiana where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was later stationed at the Port of Embarkation in New York City, New York, where he received his 1st Lieutenant Commission. He finished his tour of duty as a Transportation Service Officer aboard the US Army "Hagerstown Victory". Upon his discharge from the US Army, Rolly worked at Argus Cameras in Ann Arbor, while working part-time as an officer with the Chelsea Police Department. He retired from O&S Bearing and Manufacturing of Whitmore Lake in 1980. On December 12, 1942 he married Eunice Hart of Chelsea and she survives. Also surviving are his children, a daughter Sandra McClear of Chelsea, and a son John (Leone) White of Okemos; three grandchildren, Audra (Daniel) Lungo of Chelsea, Andrew (fiancée Susan Keuss) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Laura White of Chicago, Illinois; two great-grandchildren, Sean Lungo and Cassandra Lungo of Chelsea. Rolly was preceded in death by his parents, step-father Clayton White, sister Lyndall White Ott, son-in-law, Michael McClear, a half-brother Leo Chubb, and a half-sister June Dennis. of Chelsea, age 83, died Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Silver Maples, Chelsea. He was born September 27, 1924 in Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Charles William & Ethel Irene (Mein) Gemmill. Mr. Gemmill had lived in Chelsea since 1991. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Chelsea, and the Kane Masonic Lodge #377 F.& A.M. in Ida Grove, Iowa. Following his service in the armed forces in World War Two, Mr. Gemmill worked for the family business in Ida Grove, Gemmill Electric, until he was recruited to join General Motors. After many years in the auto industry, in many parts of the country, first in the Parts & Service Division of General Motors and then at Ford Motor Co, Mr. Gemmill retired in 1987. He then began his second career, that of volunteer at Chelsea Community Hospital, where he remained an active volunteer for 17 years, providing over 1000 hours of service. Known by many as " the flower man ", he developed and maintained a large garden on the Hospital property, where he grew thousands of beautiful flowers that were used throughout the hospital. In addition, his volunteer roles included maintaining the (then) new tropical fish tank in the E.R waiting room, and many years of staffing the desk and helping patients and their companions in the surgery waiting room. A loving and generous man, Chuck was also was an avid craftsman/artisan and made lovely jewelry and stained glass, which he enjoyed giving to others. He was married to Anna Mae Pearson in Ida Grove, Iowa on Nov. 28, 1946, and she preceded him in death on Sept. 30, 1998. He then married Agnes Buehler on May 19, 1999, and she died July 23, 1999. Survivors include two sons, Joe (Linda) Gemmill of Kalamazoo, MI, James (Amanda) Gemmill of Brighton, MI; one daughter, Lisa (Bryan Magnuson) Pasbjerg of Ann Arbor, MI; a sister, Audrey Rathjen of Missoula, MT; three grandchildren, Elise Magnuson, Bradley Gemmill and Madison Gemmill. He was preceded in death by a sister, Florence Woolridge. The family welcomes his many friends to a memorial service and celebration of his life at 5:00 PM Saturday, June7th at Silver Maples, Chelsea, with Revs. Kathy Schell and Joy Barrett officiating. She was born July 17, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Paul and Alexandria Drozd.  On Dec. 30, 1950, she married Garrison Turner in Detroit, MI and he survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Maryann (James) Slone of Chelsea, and Eileen (Mike) Becker of Winnetka, CA; three sons, Paul (Connie) Turner of Livonia, Gregory Turner of San Francisco, CA, and David (Marie) Turner of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Phyllis Oberts and Eleanor Gariepy; eight grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Charlotte Kapla.  Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 1 at noon at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. David Turner officiating. Burial will be Tuesday, June 3, at Great Lakes National Cemetery, Holly, Michigan. The family will receive friends before the funeral from 10:30 until noon.

of Chelsea, age 58, died Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital. He  was born June 22, 1949 in Stockbridge, Michigan, the son of Ishmael & Mae (Bailey) Picklesimer.  Ted graduated in 1968, and worked for Dana in Chelsea, and later for Real Estate One. He was a member of the Olive Lodge #156 Free & Accepted Masons.  Survivors include his mother, Mae Picklesimer of Chelsea; his siblings, Castle Jerry (Mary E.) Picklesimer, Linda (Gail) Shears, Rita (Karl) Gadnai, Ishmael (Debra) Picklesimer Jr., Sam (Theresa) Picklesimer, James Picklesimer; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.  The family will receive friends Friday from 2-5 & 7- 9 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 pm. of Chelsea, age 86. On Tuesday, May 27, 2008, Dorothy won her lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease and is cured and reunited with her husband Donald and infant son Joseph in the Kingdom of Heaven. She was born March 3, 1922 in Cheboygan, Michigan, the daughter of Eugene & Mary (O'Neil) DeMara.  Dorothy lived in Chelsea since 1949 She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and was employed by Xerox (University Microfilm) from 1967-1987. Although she loved music, nature, animals, and was a talented decorator, her family was most important to her. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful out look on life. She was enthusiastic about her children’s and grandchildren’s endeavors, taking interest in everything they did. She especially enjoyed spending her summers on Long Lake with her two daughters and their families.  On May 14, 1949, Dorothy married Donald Joseph Houle at St. John Catholic Church in Ypsilanti, and he preceded her in death on January 12, 1994. Survivors include two sons, Craig and John (Tami) both of Chelsea; three daughters, Denise Houle of Chelsea, Annette (Ron) Landwehr of Commerce Township, Renee (John) Allen of Commerce Township; 7 grandchildren, James Williams, Joseph Williams, McKenna O’Brien, John Houle Jr, Taylor Landwehr, Valerie Landwehr, and John Henry Donald Allen; 4 great-grandchildren, Emilee Rose Williams, Dillon & Luke Williams, Ava Marie O'Brien; 3 sisters, Marian (Robert) Olson of FL, Joan Kett of Dexter, Barbara Pickett of Cheboygan. She was preceded in death by one son, Joseph in 1955; and one grandson, Alexander Landwehr in 1986; three brothers, Hughie, Cullen, and Thomas DeMara; and one sister, Theresa Charboneau.  A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, May 30, 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with Rev. of Chelsea, MI, age 85, died peacefully Thursday, May 22, 2008 at VA Hospital in Ann Arbor with his family at his side. He was born February 4, 1923 in Prestonsburg, Kentucky, he son of Thomas & Margaret (Crum) Spears.  Tom was a WWII Veteran serving in the US Army. He worked for Motorstate in Ypsilanti, then Pepsi in Milan until his retirement in 1987. Tom loved to garden, and shared the food he grew with many people in the community.  On April 24, 1945, he married Margaret Ann Conley in Paintsville, KY, and she preceded him in death on June 17, 1990. Survivors include a son, Mike (Anita) Spears of Chelsea; four daughters, Linda (Ron) Carlson of Chelsea; Mary (Erik) Hansen of Dexter, Evelyn Spears of Chelsea; Ginger Bergey-Steinaway of Manchester; three sisters, Ruth (Clarence) Miracle, Georgie Campbell, and Carmella McConell. Tom dearly loved his 8 grandchildren, Jayma, Ronda, Tom (Karin), Brent, Caleb, Rodney, Tanya, Amanda, and Michael’s wife, Sheri; and 9 great-grandchildren, Hunter, Sean, Melissa, Tammy, Jocelyn, Jared, Alyssa, Jacob, and Landon. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Spears, 3 sisters, Dorothy Saxan, Hester Wills, Luna Rose, and a brother, Chad Spears.  Funeral services were held Saturday, May 24, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Pastor Steven L. of Chelsea, age 84 died Thursday, May 22, 2008 at her daughter’s home in Manchester, Michigan.  She was born June 6, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Joe & Mariana (Castelnuovo) Giordano.  Mrs. Piziali is formerly of Mt. Clemens.  She was the head of circulation at Mt. Clemens Public Library for many years.  She was a member of St. Peter Parish in Mt. Clemens and later became a parishioner of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Manchester.  Mrs. Piziali loved books, gardening, cooking, and taking care of her home and family.  She married Lawrence C. Piziali, Sr. on December 15, 1944, and he preceded her in death in 1967.  Survivors include a daughter, Anne Marie (Michael) Gordon of Manchester; four grandsons Aaron (Kathryn) Piziali, Zachary (Tracy) Gordon, Noah Gordon, and Nicholas Gordon; a daughter-in-law, Maureen Piziali; a niece, Mary Catherine (Bob) McCallum; and a cousin, Nina Fragola.  She was preceded in death by her sons Lawrence C. Piziali, Jr. and Christopher J. Piziali; grandson Michael H. Gordon; and a sister, Johanna Marta.  A Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, May 23rd, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Manchester, with Fr. Timothy D. of Chelsea, MI, age 61, died unexpectedly Thursday, May 15, 2008 at his home. He was born November 7, 1946 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the son of Raymond George & Dorothy Gene (Tolmie) Nye.  Jim was a Navy veteran. He was a self-employed builder. Jim was the former owner of Toms’s Party Store in Ypsilanti (1970-73)and the Suds Factory at EMU (1973-77). He also owned the Cavanaugh Lake Party Store from 1979-83. He was a happy guy who liked to hang out with family and friends and tinker in the garage.  He is survived by two sons, Reno (Cori) Nye and Rex (Sara) Nye, both of Chelsea; a brother, Tom (Roberta) Nye of Reno, NV; 4 grandchildren, Wyatt, Maya, Samantha, & Abbie Nye; 3 nieces and nephews, Tony, Nancy, and Suzie. Raymond "Jack" Murphy

of Jackson, MI, age 92, died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at his home. He was born April 18, 1916 in Harerhill, Massachusetts, the son of Michael & Rose (St. Pierre) Murphy.  Jack has resided in Jackson since 1994. He was a former member of St. Pius Catholic Church in Flint. He was a general foreman at A.C. Spark Plug, a member of General Motors Executive Club, Fisher Body Guild, the Clio Country Club, and the AC Bowling Association. He was also a leader in Cub Scouts & Indian Guides.  He married Norma R. Smith on Oct. 15, 1938 in Grand Blanc, MI, and she preceded him in death on March 22, 2003. Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Juanita Murphy of Chelsea; a sister, Mary Rose Deritte of Las Vegas; two grandchildren, Matthew (Leann) Murphy of Chelsea and Ceia Murphy of Saline; 4 great-grandchildren, Amanda, Hayley, Nicholas, and Maxwell; and many nieces & nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son, Robert M. Murphy in 1998, and a grandson, Robert R. of Grass Lake, MI, formerly of Chelsea, age 69, died Friday, May 2, 2008 in his home. He was born March 2, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Edward Willard and Harriet Cotton (Letts) Heeter.  Dwight was a salesman for Hadley-Roma Inc, and he owned several small businesses, including Chelsea Automotive (1975-79), and Heeter Hardware in Stockbridge (1986-89). He loved golf, and was a member at Inverness Country Club for over 26 years, where he made many friends. Dwight was a US Coast Guard Veteran, as well as a charter member of the Chelsea Lions Club. When his children were young, Dwight was a cub scout leader in Chelsea.  On September 17, 1966, he married Kathleen Sadowski in Lorain, OH, and she survives. Survivors include four children, Derek (Amy) Thiery of West Bloomfield, Lisa (David) Morris of Chelsea, Laura (James) Etue of Grass Lake, and Adam Heeter of Whitmore Lake; a brother, William (Beverly) Heeter of AZ; 3 grandchildren, Erika (Jason) Knisely, Benjamin Morris, Aaron Etue; 5 great-grandchildren, Kathleen, Karolyn, and Kayla Scripter, Michael & Chasey Knisely; many nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 7, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. of Dexter, MI, age 45, died peacefully Thursday, May 1, 2008 in his home. He was born  October 5, 1962 in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the son of Richard L. & Joy M. (Hazard) Davis.  Rick graduated from High Point Intermediate School. He was employed for 10 years at Paul Bunyan’s and for 6 years at Dexter’s Pub. Rick was a tremendous sports enthusiast with an emphasis on U of M football and NASCAR racing.  Survivors include his parents; his paternal grandmother, Lucille (Mackey) Davis; two sisters, Rhonda (Phillip) Miller, and Helen Hergott; a nephew, Mitchell Granet; and a niece, Jillian Hergott.  Rick was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Leroy "Jack" Davis, and his maternal grandmother, Isabelle (Holland) Hazard.  A memorial service will be held Monday, May 5, 6:30 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Deacon Tom Franklin officiating. of Chelsea, Michigan, formerly of Taylorsville, NC and Ypsilanti, MI, age 71, died Saturday,  April 26, 2008 at Foote Hospital in Jackson after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was born November 18, 1936 in Princeton, West Virginia.  He was a US Army Veteran.  Richard hung and finished drywall, calling himself a "sheetrockologist". He loved his family and friends. Every time he left the house, he was on a mission to visit them.  He is survived by his children, Michelle (Rob) Geiger of Atlanta, GA, Vincent (Tracie) Salyer of Taylorsville, NC, Tonya (Eric) Barnaby of Chelsea, Tammy Yost of Chelsea, Richard H. Yost II of Dexter; 12 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Age 78, died Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was born October 5, 1929 in Chelsea, Michigan, the son of Maynard Laverne & Ethel (Kennedy) Knickerbocker.  Clare held many offices in the Manchester United Methodist Church, where he also designed and built the stained glass windows for the sanctuary. Clare was a proud Mason, holding offices of Past Master, Past High Priest Royal Arch, Past Patron of OES, Past Associate Bethel Guardian of Job's Daughters. Mr. Knickerbocker worked at Chelsea Chrysler Proving Grounds for 36 years, retiring in 1991. Clare served his country in the US Army from 1950-1952.  He married Beverly Tilford in Detroit, on May 8, 1954, and she preceded him in death on April 2, 2001. Survivors include daughters, COL Deborah Knickerbocker of Arlington, VA, Pamela Knickerbocker of South Lyon, Sandra (Martin) Haas of Dexter, & Lisa (Kevin) Jarema of Milan; 2 brothers, David H. (Carole) and Alfred B. (Deanna) both of CA; 1 sister, Dorothy A. Collins of Virginia Beach, VA; 2 grandchildren, Joshua Clare & Katherine Lyn Jarema; special family friend, Linda McCrea; many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. He was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Harvey, George, Ray, and Stanley.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 26, 10:30 am at the Manchester United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at Oak Grove East Cemetery, Chelsea. The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel on Thursday 5-9 pm & Friday 1-4 and 6-9 pm, with a Masonic Service at 7 pm. Tom graduated from Chelsea High School in 1983. He attended Queen of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Jackson. Tom worked for McEwen Trucking Company in Corunna. He received his associates degree from Northwood University. He is survived by his parents, Don & Sally Proctor of Fairfield Glade, TN; his sisters, Erin Headrick of Denver, CO, Kelly Smith of Detroit, Lisa (Jim) Townsend of Grass Lake, Kristi (John) Eidt of Chelsea; his brothers, Dale (Linda) Headrick of Portland, OR, Todd Headrick of Carbondale, IL, Eric (Kris) Headrick of Livonia; step-sisters, Lori Butler of Chelsea, Janis Weston of Chelsea, Barb LeBel of FL, step-brothers, Dave (Julie) Proctor of Harrison, MI, Rick (Lara) Proctor of IL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his step-sister, Julie Proctor, his father, Robert Headrick, and his grandparents, Robert & Jeanette Wheeler. He will be sadly missed by his best friend Russell (Sharon) Harris. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 22, 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Dr. William J. She was born May 22, 1946 in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of Claude & Pauline (Eagler) Himmelein.  She was active in the American Legion #510 Auxiliary and taught evening classes in knitting at the Stockbridge schools. Marcia and Don owned "Don's Village Restaurant" in Stockbridge.  On October 25, 1969, she married Donald Leroy Davis Jr., in Las Vegas, NV, and he survives. She is also survived by her mother of HI; a son, John (Michelle) Davis of Unadilla; two daughters, Wendy Davis of ID and Jamie (Mike) Lewis of CA; two sisters, Cathy Weible of CA and Linda van der Voorde of FL; 5 grandchildren, Bradley, Jacob, Madyson, Dakota, John Jr.; 1 great-grandchild, Tyler; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father.  The family will receive friends and remember Marcia on Saturday, April 19 from11:00 am to 3 :00 pm at the American Legion Hall in Stockbridge. of Holland, formerly of Chelsea, passed away April 12, 2008 at the Inn at Freedom Village, Holland, MI after a long illness. The daughter of Orabelle A. & Samuel L. Drake, she was born in Tazewell, Virginia in 1921. She married William B. Travis in Hopewell, VA, and they shared 50 years together before his death in 1993. A graduate of Mt. Sinai Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia, she had a long professional career and retired from U of M Hospital, Ann Arbor, MI.  She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Ann Pedler; granddaughter Jane Magennis; 3 brothers Harry Drake, Samuel Drake Jr., Welmont Drake; 2 sisters Agnes Olive and Anna Mangum.  She is survived by daughter Janet and Steven Magennis of Holland, MI; son-in-law, Richard Pedler of Elkhart, IN. Her grandchildren are Collin and Beth Magennis and Kristin Magennis of Holland, MI, Jeffrey Miller and Julie Tyrakowski of Edwardsburg, MI; step-grandchildren Stephaney and Michael Nay of Goshen, IN and Elizabeth and Brent Kattau of Elkhart, IN. She enjoyed great-grandchildren Erin and Kyle Magennis, Cade Tyrakowski, Evan and Reagan Nay and Layla and Marley Kattau. She was the last of six siblings and is survived by sisters-in-law Anna Drake and Catherine Drake, as well as nieces and nephews.  Always a child of God and a believer in social justice, she was formerly a member of Calvary Community Reformed Church in Southgate, MI and St. Paul United Church of Christ in Chelsea, MI. She joined First Presbyterian Church in Holland when she retired to Freedom Village. Her children recall her dedication to their education, including musical training. She organized a nursery school and was active in PTA and teaching church school, the Chelsea Women’s Club, and Jackson Fez Club. She composed hundreds of short, original poems to friends and family shared in birthday and holiday cards. Her grandchildren recall summer visits spent harvesting and canning green beans from her garden. She enjoyed traveling and held U of M football tickets for several decades. As her memory faded she enjoyed the view from her window overlooking the pond by Windmill Island, and so appreciated the loving care of the staff at the Inn at Freedom Village. A memorial service was held Thursday, April 17, 11:00 am at First Presbyterian Church, 659 State Street, Holland, MI, with Rev. Linda Knieriemen officiating. Burial was at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens, Hopewell, VA.  Memorial gifts may be given to the First Presbyterian Church in Holland, MI or Greater Michigan Alzheimer’s Association. of Chelsea, age 98, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born July 25, 1909 in New Boston, Michigan, the daughter of Fred & Minnie A. (Havenstein) Wolf. Mrs. Whitney has lived in Chelsea since 1940. She was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and the Limaneers. She married Earl Whitney in Waltz, Michigan on June 1, 1927, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 2000. Survivors include her nieces & nephews, Don Turner, Stanley Turner, Maxine Masielski, Artith Farris, Jerry Mittlestat, Bill Mittlestat, and Dorothy Olsen. She was preceded in death by her sister, Ida Mittlestat, and her brother, Herman Wolf. Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 16, 2008, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Kenyon Edwards officiating. Burial followed at Michigan Memorial Park, Flat Rock. The family received friends Tuesday, 2-4 and 6-8 pm. of Grass Lake, age 59.  Ralph was born April 14th, 1948 on Staten Island, NY, the third child of Bjarne and Doris Nilsen. He went to his eternal home in glory on Sunday, April 6, 2008 at Critical Care Center at the University of Michigan Medical Center. He was a graduate of the NY High School of Printing and the Brooklyn Community College in NYC, now New York City Technical College. He went on to attend Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. Ralph served in the United States Navy from 1967-1969. Married in San Francisco in 1974, he is survived by his wife, Kathryn Edith (White) Nilsen, his sister Anne I. Nilsen of Pacifica, CA and two daughters; Corinna A. Nilsen of Pacifica, CA and Laura K. Osborne (Kevin) of Kalamazoo, MI, as well as many cousins and aunts both in America and Norway. He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother Eric who died in Vietnam in 1968. Visitation at Chelsea First Methodist Church 128 Park Street, on Thursday, April 10, from 3-5 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. and Friday from noon - 1 pm.  A celebration of life service will be held at the church, Friday, April 11, 1:00 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Chelsea First United Methodist Church.

of Ann Arbor. Age 71, died Monday, April 7, 2008 at his home. He was born August 24,  1936 in Tennessee, the son of Herbert & Ada (Keck) Sharpe. On August 2, 1957 he married Ethel Joyce Brown, and she preceded him in death on March 20, 2005. He is survived by one son, Ken (Judy) Sharpe of Columbia Falls, MT; a sister, Marge Brown of Monroe MI ; three grandchildren, Eric, Allison, and Carolyn Sharpe. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and Kermit Sharpe, and a daughter, Darlene Sharpe. Jack was a proud veteran from the First Calvary Division, Eighth Calvary Regiment of the United States Army. Jack retired after a 30 year career from MichCon. He was an avid outdoorsman and created many special memories afield with family and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 11, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Irene’s grandchildren were her life. She loved animals, enjoyed gardening, and was an avid reader. On Sept. 6, 1958, she married Gene Louis Ahrens at Holy Cross Church in Detroit, and he survives. Other survivors include three children, Theresa (Danny) Lancaster of Chelsea, Andrew (Lisa) Ahrens of Grass Lake, and Mark Ahrens of Grass Lake; two brothers, Andrew (Peggy) Sviatko of Brighton, Frank (Stella) Sviatko of Lincoln Park; 4 grandchildren, Kimberley (Chris) Potocki, Thomas Lancaster, David Ahrens, and Ashley Ahrens; a niece, Jennifer (Chris) Sheehan. She was preceded in death by 2 grandchildren, Kathryn Lancaster and Justin Ahrens; and a nephew, Andrew Sviatko. of Chelsea, age 86, died Friday, March 28, 2008 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born May 6, 1921 in Canton, IL, the daughter of Albert and Mary Elizabeth (Bell) Hosking. Alberta was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Women of Zion, Chelsea Women’s Club, and the Chelsea Community Hospital Auxiliary. She was a former employee of General Fireproofing and Wayne County Friend of the Court. She was previously a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Detroit.  On February 17, 1962, she married Robert Wade in Detroit, and he survives. Other survivors include a brother, William Hosking, three sisters, Christine Jurgensen, Mary Kress, Clara Mathie; a God-son, Thor Sandell; a God-daughter, Kierstin Sandell Drzal; and many nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, 11:00 am at the Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel , with Rev. of Chelsea, age 86, died Thursday, March 20, 2008. She passed away peacefully at home after a long illness. She was born February 27, 1922 in Howard County, Indiana, the daughter of James M. & Gladys (Speece) Smith.  Imogene was a member of the VFW auxiliary. She was a Girl Scout Leader and Camp Director at Camp Newkirk and Camp Hilltop. She worked at the Methodist Home (Chelsea Retirement Community), where she was a Union Steward and Head Cook. Imogene also worked at Goodyear’s, Sears, and King-Seeley. She and Carmer loved camping, and were members of the Roaming Coachman Camper's Club.  On July 5, 1941, she married Carmer L. Slocum Jr. in Napoleon, Ohio, and he preceded her in death on December 28, 1996. Survivors include her children, Michael K. (Judy) Slocum of Chelsea, Mary K. Corkern of Chelsea, Carmer J. Slocum of Chelsea, Gregory R. (Keith Cross) Slocum of Houston, TX; 3 grandchildren, Victoria Wright, Stephen Slocum, Toby Corkern; 4 great-grandchildren, Alexander Slocum, Kylie Slocum, Matthew Wright, Justin Corkern; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Smith, sisters, Lois Speer and Klyle Amon; and a son, Carmer L. of  Patterson Lake, age 41, died of natural causes Saturday, March 15, 2008 while hunting  in Lyndon Township with his family and friends. He was born September 2, 1966 in Trenton, Michigan, the son of Robert & Carol (Pietila) Denny.  Bobby worked for PDF Manufacturing in Grass Lake. He was a member at Chelsea Free Methodist Church. Bobby had a passion for the outdoors. He shared his love of hunting and fishing with children, and with the "Sportsman’s Aim" ministry at the Chelsea Free Methodist Church. He was a wonderful father and devoted husband.  On March 29, 1996, he married Vicki Ackerman, and she survives. Other survivors include his mother & step-father, Carol & Bill Ostrander of Stockbridge; his father, Robert Denny of Chelsea; two children, Bobby & Carolyn; brother Wilson Denny of Grass Lake; sister Rhonda (Daryl) Mosher of Grass Lake; his special cousins, Kim (Tom) Cornack and J.D. Charles, who grew up with him; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents.  Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 20, 11:00 am at Chelsea Free Methodist Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Larry Lyons & Rev. Jeff Bradley officiating. of  Chelsea, age 95, died Friday, February 29, 2008 at Arbor Hospice. She was born February 22, 1913 in Mesick, Michigan, the daughter of Glen and Carrie (Bradshaw) Clark.  Eunice moved to Ann Arbor after graduation. She worked at the University of Michigan Hospitals and retired from there. For many years she wintered in Ft Myers, FL and spent her summers in Fife Lake, MI. In her later years she lived with her daughter Joan in Chelsea.  She married Sam Peters in Ann Arbor on October 1, 1931, and he preceded her in death in 1991. Survivors include a daughter, Joan Birgy of Chelsea; 7 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia Inman; a son-in-law, Larry Birgy in 2004; many brothers and sisters.  A private memorial service will be held at a later date. She was born March 19, 1930 in Coin, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd & Ruby (Merchant) Hoskins.  Mary Beth was an RN, providing home health care in the Flint area, retiring in 2000. He was born October 10, 1949 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of David & Rosanne (Kennedy ) Marchand.  He married Shirley Harmon on January 6, 1986 in Huntsville, Alabama, and she survives. Other survivors include his mother, Rosanne Marchand of Sun City, AZ; a daughter, Angela Marchand of Whitmore Lake; and two sisters, Renee (Mark) Bernier of Tempe, AZ and Genette (Dave) Burman of Sun City, AZ. of Chelsea, age 92, died Friday, February 15, 2008 at Silver Maples of Chelsea. He was born September 13, 1915 in Belton, Texas , the son of Peyton & Maggie (Burkley) Jacob. He grew up in Americus, Georgia.  Joe received his BA, M.Ed. and Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia. In 1945, he became a medical doctor upon graduation from Emory University of Atlanta. He completed his internship at the University of Michigan Hospitals.  Joe was a WWII Army Veteran. He obtained the rank of captain while serving in Weisbaden, Germany from 1946-1948. Joe finished his residency in psychiatry at the University of Michigan in 1949, and underwent psychoanalytic training in the 1950’s. Dr. Jacob was a psychoanalyst in private practice in Ann Arbor for over forty years, and was instrumental in training other psychoanalysts and mental health professionals.  He married Mattie Weaver on March 18, 1938, in Athens, GA. and she preceded him in death on July 1, 2004. Mattie and Joe lived on Vinewood Boulevard in Ann Arbor for many decades. Other survivors include three daughters, Jane (William) White of Rock Hill, SC, Susan Jacob of Mt. Pleasant, and Amy (James) Hetzler of Ann Arbor; five grandchildren, Peyton White, Peter White, Andrew Neal, Lucy Hetzler, and Mike Hetzler. He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph B. Jacob in 2000; a brother Peyton Jacob, Jr.; and two sisters, Doris Braselton and Marjorie Caudill.  Joe will be remembered for his sense of humor, his jokes and puns, his love of family and friends, and his strong belief in the autonomy of the individual. A celebration of Joe’s life will be held Saturday, March 15, 2:00 pm at Silver Maples of Chelsea.  His family thanks the Silver Maples staff and Arbor Hospice for their wonderful, attentive care. Chelsea, MI, formerly of Ann Arbor, Age 79, died Wednesday, February 6, 2008 in her  home. She was born July 5, 1928 in Cedar, West Virginia, the daughter of Elliot & Fannie (Lilly) Lawson. Lillian was proud to be from West Virginia.  In June of 1972, she married Saburo Aburano in Ypsilanti, and he preceded her in death in 2003. Survivors include three sons, Gene (Sheila) Walk of Wixom, Steve Walk of Chelsea, Terry Shewmake of Ann Arbor; two daughters, Joyce (Larry Kotz) Leigh of Ann Arbor, Sharon (Greg) Gaynor of Stockbridge; two sisters, Earsel Hardin of Milford; Wanda (Bob) Fronzaglio of Mt. Airy, Maryland; 8 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a baby, James, and three brothers, Elliot "Roe" Jr., Edward, and Albert Lawson.  Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 9, 11:00 am at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea, with Rev. Jeff Crowder officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 - 11:00 am before the funeral. Burial will be at Oak Grove East Cemetery, Chelsea.

 

bulletWilliam R. "Ray" Brownell

of Chelsea, MI, age 96, died Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. He was born October 29, 1911 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of William J. & Mary Etta  (Robb) Brownell.  Mr. Brownell graduated from the University of Michigan. He retired from Parke Davis on Nov. 1, 1973, where he was a production manager. He was a member of the Senior Men's Club in Grosse Pointe. William & Florence moved to Chelsea in 1992.  On October 29, 1949, he married Florence Hewitt in Grosse Pointe, MI, and she preceded him in death on August 14, 1998 Survivors include one son, James A. (Joan) Brownell of Davenport, IA; one daughter, Virginia (John) Chapman of Austin, TX; and 4 grandchildren, Patrick & Jeffrey Chapman, Cassondra & Suzanne Brownell. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 11, 11:00 am at the Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel with the Rev. Beth Foster officiating..  His ashes will be placed in the Mausoleum at Woodlawn Cemetery, Detroit. Memorial contributions may be made to Chelsea Retirement Community. bulletRobina "Robin" Katherine Gillette

Age 93, died peacefully Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Chelsea Retirement Community, with her daughter and devoted friend, Jack Edington, at her side. She was born August 3, 1914 in Galveston, Texas, the daughter of Paul and Margaret Christian (Barkelew) Watson. Robin loved to travel, see new places, and meet new people. While her husband Charles was in the army, she lived in several states in the East, South, and Midwest, as well as Japan, Hawaii, and Panama. Besides being a wonderful loving mother and grandmother, she had several careers, including selling real estate, taking small groups on tours of England, and creating her own company to import custom made skirts and woolens from Scotland. She was an excellent cook and hostess, which led her to purchase the Pentagoet Inn in Castine, Maine, which she redecorated and ran for several years. Robin was an avid reader and bridge player. She loved parties and entertaining and always made people feel welcome with her beautiful smile. She loved animals, especially her beloved Jenny, who was with her until last year. She married Charles Odenweller in Galveston, Texas in 1935, and he preceded her in death. She married Edward C. Gillette in Arlington, Virginia in 1967 and he preceded her in death in 1986. Survivors include a daughter, Robin Meloche (Jack Edington) of Dexter; three sons, Charles(Anne) Odenweller of Paoli, PA, Robert (Jane) Odenweller of Bernardsville, NJ, and her beloved step-son, Michael (Felicity) Gillette of Great Falls, VA; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Peter Odenweller; 2 brothers, Edward and Paul Watson; and 3 sisters, Margaret Watson, Barbara McLorie, and Marianne Dodge. Her family wants to give special thanks to the wonderful staff at Towsley Village, where she lived for the last 4 years, and especially to all the caregivers who have worked in Hummingbird. They gave her so much love, special care, attention, and devotion, and she loved them in return. They will never be forgotten. A memorial service will be held Monday, February 18, 2:30 pm at Chelsea Retirement Community (Towsley Village Chapel). Burial will be at West Point Cemetery, West Point, New York. bulletWilliam C. Morse

of Chelsea,  died Friday, January 25, 2008, at the age of 92, at his home in the Chelsea Retirement Community, surrounded by family and a close friend.  Born October 23, 1915, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Dr. Morse earned his PhD in psychology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He co-founded and chaired the Combined Program in Education and Psychology at the university. For 15 years he directed the University of Michigan Fresh Air Camp, a dynamic training setting for special education teachers and social workers. The university honored Dr. Morse with the prestigious Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in 1970. After retirement as faculty emeritus, Dr. Morse served as visiting professor at the University of California/Northridge and the University of South Florida at Tampa.  Professor, author and mentor to countless aspiring educators, Dr. Morse was beloved by colleagues and students alike for his compassion, wisdom and dynamic leadership in guiding individuals to become effective advocates for and teachers of disturbed children. Dr. Morse was renowned in the field of special education. In 1977 he received the E. Wallace Wallin Education of Handicapped Children Annual Award.  Family, friends and colleagues will remember Dr. Morse’s humor, sensitivity, irreverence, passion for Democratic politics, and devotion to his longtime summer home in McGregor Bay, Ontario. He was a man who could tackle anything and did so throughout his life. Leaving his home on Penncraft Court in Ann Arbor was difficult for him and his wife Sunny, where they had built their house with their own hands with the help of friends in 1940, raised a family and served the community for more than 65 years.  Dr. Morse is survived by his wife of 71 years, Bernice S. (Sunny) Morse of Chelsea, MI; his daughter Susan S. Morse of Chelsea; his son James D. Morse and daughter-in-law Katherine Gantz Morse of Everett, WA; and his grandson Jeremy G. Morse and Jeremy’s fiancé Kelly Flammia, of Chicago, IL.  No services are planned at this time. of Ann Arbor, died peacefully Thursday, January 24, 2008 in her home. She was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia, the daughter of Oscar & Pauline (Fernandez) Alvarez.  Lydia was a media specialist for the Ann Arbor Public Schools. On April 12, 1963, she married William Trachet in Miami, FL and he survives. Other survivors include her mother of Atlantis, FL; two daughters, Stephanie Jo Trachet of Ann Arbor, Kathleen Elizabeth (David) Jacobs of Dixon, IL; one son, William Henry Trachet of Brooklyn, NY; two sisters, Gloria Fuller of Pensacola, FL, Sheila (John) Rinker of Palm Beach, FL; and 2 grandchildren, Brian and Michael Jacobs. She was preceded in death by her father.  The family will receive friends Sunday, January 27, Noon - 5 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea. of Chelsea, age 84, passed away at the University of Michigan Hospital on January 24, 2008. She is survived by her husband Stephen J. Rogers, her three children, Margaret Guilford and her husband Mickey of Windsor, California, David Rogers of Cincinnati, Ohio and Dana Rogers of Chelsea, Michigan as well as a brother, Dr. Steele F. (Nancy) Stewart Jr. of Rockville, Maryland and a sister, Carol (Kenneth) Dole of Palo Alto, California and two grandchildren, Anne Fisher of Santa Rosa, California, and James Guilford of Windsor, California.  Born September 1923 in Los Angeles, California, to Dr. Steele F. Stewart and Ruth Elizabeth Sawyer Stewart, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1945, joining Filene’s Department Store in Boston, Massachusetts as an assistant buyer.  A friend to many, she was a wonderful wife to her husband for nearly 60 years and a beloved mother to her three children. Sally often said that the most creative thing she did was to raise her children and the second most creative was her cooking. Her love of travel and the arts, especially Asian Art, Folk Arts and music reflected her deep appreciation of all things creative.  Always active in the communities in which she lived, she served on the Board of the Friends of the University of Michigan Museum of Art, she proposed and organized the highly successful first Art and Antique Auction and Sale to benefit the museum. She also served as a volunteer aid to the Director of Oriental Art. As a member of the University of Michigan Musical Society, she served as a house mother to Jessye Norman when she was a student at the University’s School of Music. She served as President of International Neighbors and as a guide at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. Skilled and creative at needlework, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church’s Needlework Guild that made needlework seat cushions for the choir. A lover of good books, she was active in book review groups. In recent years, she enjoyed knitting sweaters for fund raising groups.  She will be missed by all those who grew to love her. bulletCatherine Canfield Steger

of Chelsea, age 97, died Tuesday, January 15, 2007 at the Chelsea Hospital. She had been a resident of the Chelsea Retirement Community for over 11 years. She was born in 1910 in Chelsea, Michigan, the daughter of Howard and Ellen (Wilson) Canfield. Catherine graduated from St. Mary School and after the sudden death of her father, went to work becoming the sole support for her mother and herself. She worked in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan in the alumni and athletic offices, and then took a job at the Federal Screw Works in Chelsea. An office romance with the boy who lived around the corner began and she married William Arnold Steger in June 1938.  Catherine was a "bloomer girl" – the required uniform for playing high school basketball, and she also championed women’s advancement for her daughter and granddaughters. She was always an avid sports fan joining her husband in following University of Michigan football and basketball teams as well as the Detroit Tigers. She volunteered in many church and community activities including the St. Mary Church Altar Society and the Girl Scouts, and she worked for many years as an election official. She will be remembered for her intelligence, modesty, grace, loyalty, kindness and determination. She cherished her family and was always the first to offer assistance or a donation from her hidden cash fund to help one of her children or grandchildren. Catherine dared to dream and helped her family set personal goals beyond what might have been expected often providing encouragement behind the scenes. Catherine was a life-long member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and will also be remembered for her devout faith as well as her quiet but steadfast commitment to those who mattered most, her family and her friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents Howard and Ellen, a brother Charles and a sister Margaret, her beloved husband, William Arnold Steger (1981), and her son, Robert Augustus Steger (2005). Surviving Catherine are her daughter Susan Margaret and son-in-law Richard Anders Johnson, her daughter-in-law Julie Steger and four grandchildren Kristin Elizabeth Johnson, Britt Alison Johnson, Robert Augustus Steger II and Michael James Steger.  Catherine’s family would like to extend its heartfelt gratitude to all who have provided so much support to her through the years with a special thanks to Jo Bennett and Rose Perlongo who faithfully visited her each week bringing church and community news, to long- time friends John and Madeline Keusch, to the doctors, nurses and staff at Chelsea Hospital for their excellent care, and to her many friends and the staff at the Chelsea Retirement Community who provided a warm and caring environment for her last years.  A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 18, 11:00 am at Saint Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Chelsea. The family will receive friends at Cole Funeral Chapel Thursday 3-5 and 7-9 pm, with the Rosary at 7:30 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Mary Catholic Church.

of Chelsea, formerly of Chicago and Oak Park, IL, age 90, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born August 21, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Herman Jacob & Anna Katherine (Kirchner) Riemensperger. She was bookkeeper for Wiebolt's Department Store, as well as an office manager at Walker & Co.  She married Harry E. Armour in 1947, and he preceded her in death on January 14, 1978. Survivors include her niece, Pearl (John L.) Summers. She was preceded in death by her 3 brothers, Walter H. in 1984, Stanley H. in 1996 and Herman in 2004, and her sister, Anna K. Riemensperger in 2006.  A memorial service will be held at the Chelsea Retirement Community (Towsely Village Chapel) on Wednesday, January 16, 2:30 pm, with Rev. Beth Foster officiating.  Burial will be at Arlington Cemetery, Elmhurst, Illinois. Arrangements by Cole Funeral Chapel, Chelsea.

of Chelsea, age 95, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at Chelsea Retirement Community. She was born January 18, 1912 in Jackson, Michigan, the daughter of Frank & Emma (Frey) Bostwick, and adopted by her grandparents Christian and Mary (Schaible) Frey. Katherine  was a member of the Pinckney Community United Church of Christ. She was a house wife and held several short-term jobs, including working at Ford Motor Company during World War II. Katherine, along with her husband, owned the Hamburg Hardware in Hamburg, MI for 9 years. She enjoyed growing flowers, traveling with her husband throughout the U.S. and Canada and rarely lost a card game.  On November 28, 1931, she married Donald C. Weed, who preceded her in death on June 3, 1994. Survivors include one daughter, Audrey McGregor (Gerald) of Palm Coast, Florida; 4 grandchildren: Brett Weed (Stacey) of Clackamas, Oregon, Greg Weed (Jodi) of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Leanne Harbaugh of Jackson, Michigan and Cheri McGregor of Sharon, Massachusetts; former daughter-in-law, Jean Taylor and close family friend, Marcia Bamber; 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Weed; a granddaughter, Kaelyn McGregor; and her brother, Paul Frey.  Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 5, 2:00 PM at Chelsea Retirement Community Chapel, 801 W. Middle St, Chelsea, with Rev. Beth Foster officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until time of service. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Manchester.
